Symphony No. 9 in D major, "Unfinished". (Orch. Gavriil Yudin)

Really fine performances. On Par with the Orfeo recordings with Neeme Järvi at the helm.
I agree. I really like the fragment of the 9th Symphony and wish that Glazunov had been able to complete it.

Aarre Merikanto's Ekho
Petri Sakari, Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, Anu Komsi (soprano)

My first time with Finland's other composer! Good stuff  ;D

As The New Grove puts it, "His mature style may be seen as a fusion of chromatic polyphony, Russian 'mystical' colour and Finnish folkdance rhythms; he was one of the pioneers of highly chromatic, and highly coloured, writing in Finland, and for years, even decades, his endeavours were not understood." I can vouch for the chromaticism!
That's a fine CD. I must listen to it again.

Nikolai Tcherepnin 'Destiny - Three Symphonic Fragments on a Ballad by Edgar Allan Poe'. Characteristically atmospheric music and most enjoyable:

Hindemith: Five Pieces for String Orchestra, Op. 44 - Musici Pragenses. Never heard this version on Supraphon (from 1964), and it's quite spirited, with some good attention to detail and transparency. If the group isn't in the top flight of ensembles, that's OK. (Though I dream of the day when a really, really great ensemble performs this piece.)

[Re Ives syms 3 & 4] ... it's all wonderfully chaotic and exactingly precise at the same time. There's nothing else in music quite like it.

As good a nutshell summary of Ives as I've seen.

In action here:

Schumann: Piano Sonata No.3

Eric Le Sage (piano)

Music that positively brims with Schumannesque effervescence, charm and great music (and Le Sage responds accordingly), even if I feel that Schumann rarely quite plumbs the depths of intimacy in the more formal setting of sonatas/symphonies that he does in his more free form pieces. They seem to impose some kind of constraint on him, rather than as with Beethoven/Mahler etc who seem propelled to even greater depths by the setting.

First disc finished. What an absolutely exquisite disc this is!

I feel this is in the same league as Vikingur Olafssons Bach disc.

Such an exquisite work. Martin is an under-appreciated master, IMHO.

I love that disc ! The violin concerto's big first movement is a gem.
