Roussel, Le Festin de L'Araignée, ORTF

I have it on the Martinon Icon set (and on a prior Erato CD). It originally looked like this.

A lighthearted work, for a ballet with a scenario involving insects. Some wonderfully lively music, and some poignant music. Beautifully performed and recorded.

Pounds the table (but avoids crushing the insects)!!! ;D

Schulhoff's Concerto for String Quartet with accompaniment by Wind Orchestra from that same Panton album.

On first listen to, I enjoyed the Schulhoff much more than the Martinu work--which surprised me a bit.

He was one of my first musical hero's together with Fritz Wunderlich. :)

As mentioned in the Frank Martin thread...

NP:

Martin
Concerto pour clavecin
Rudolf Scheidegger, clavecin
Musikkollegium Winterthur
Jac van Steen

I'm not crazy about the clavecin in general as I don't think it's a compelling solo instrument, but the accompaniment surrounding the solo part that Martin wrote is quite fine.

If l had to pick one classical partnership from the 20th Century, that's probably my choice.

Do you listen to all the Schubert "lieder"or only an anthology ?

Gade, Niels - Symphonies - Järvi vs. Hogwood - SPOTIFY COMPARISIONS?  Well, Harry's been listening to the Järvi box (first pic below) and really enjoying; I own the 4 Volumes w/ Hogwood and the Danish National RSO; SO, do I want to switch and cull or own both (likely not the latter, one 'good' set is enough for me) - this morning I listened to Symphonies 1 and most of 7 on Spotify - well, both sounded fine to me; also read a bunch of reviews (if interested, see attachment - plenty of excellent ones for Hogwood but could just find one for Järvi, however, a 10/10 from David Hurwitz!) - bottom like is I'll just keep my Hogwood - cannot see one going wrong w/ either set (or both, if desired).  Dave :)

Hurray!  I love both of them too!

So sad that Wunderlich died in his prime.  :'(

I think highly of that CD featuring Symphony No.6, On Wenlock Edge and In the Fen Country. It makes a very nice programme.

Richard Strauss: Festival Prelude for Organ and Orchestra.
This is my favourite work from a composer whose music I generally dislike:
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

Owning the Haitink haters? :)

Haitink's is not my favorite RVW set overall, but I remember greatly enjoying the last installment, symphonies 8 and 9.

Yes indeed. I'm listening to Wenlock now.

Suite from "Der Sturm"
Thomas Oliemans (baritone)
Stavanger Symphony Orchestra
Steven Sloane

If one doesn't have the time to listen to Martin's Der Sturm, then this suite will certainly give you some highlights. I own two recordings of this suite: this one on MDG and Bamert on Chandos. Of course, I strongly suggest checking out the complete Der Sturm on Hyperion, although I believe it's OOP now. :( I'm glad I bought it when it came out!

If I remember correctly he had fallen down the stairs  :(, in my opinion he has no successor who can match the splendor of his voice and personality.

I think the Fourth is the only wink link in Haitink's cycle but if I had to pick a favorite or two it would be his 8th and 9th.
