I've always had great respect for Paddington because he is amusingly English and a eccentric bear He is a great British institution and emits great wisdom with every growl. Of course I have Paddington at home, he is a member of the family, sure he is from the moment he was born. We have adopted him.

Novák: String Quartet No. 3

Why is not this masterpiece better known and more recorded? Thoroughly eloquent piece. That 2nd. movement Lento doloroso is something else.

+1 for Novak's Chamber Music - do you know this disc as well.....?

+2 for Novak's chamber music.

Now playing - Alan Rawsthorne PC No.1
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

I do not remember I ever saw it!

It's amazing how much difference the sound equipment makes - though I know I don't need to tell you that. I just started to listen to it on the big electrostatics and it sounded uninteresting. Now in the LS3/5As it sounds wonderful!

I know full well yes.I wonder what my Avalon's will do. The LS3/5a is a truly wonderful speaker, still have a pair on my attic. Could not get it over my heart to sell them.

Chopin (Ashkenazy album series, volume 7)

It's been a long while since I've listened to the 2nd piano sonata (which occupies side A of the LP), partly because I don't find that infamous finale very satisfying. But that meant I'd forgotten how fantastic the opening movement is, and the outer sections of the scherzo.

Looking forward to side B, which is the op.39 scherzo, followed by the op.41 mazurkas, followed by the op.40 polonaises.

Chorale der Neumeister Sammlung played on the Doring Organ of the Heiligen Kreuz in Bettenhausen.

Charles Avison.

12 Concerti Grossi (1744) after Sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti.

The Brandenburg Consort, Roy Goodman.
Recorded in 1994.

It must be said that Tony Faulkner delivered a pristine recording, and Roy Goodman delivered in terms of a fine performance. This interpretation still holds his deserved colours high above many other interpretations.

A perfect example of a nice recording to run once (or twice) on a streaming service.

When is this recording from?  And your Penderecki one looks tempting too!

Did you change only the speakers in your listening setup?

At my end, I sometimes find that my better setup can reveal too much detail at times making it harder to enjoy far-from-perfect recordings.  And I do better listening to those on an old and inexpensive system!   ::)
