Thought I'd let Hindemith be Czech for the day!

Good to know that Pavel in Czech corresponds to Paul in English!

Don't have vivid memories of the Jongen, but the Samuel is a bore.

The Samuel is not an attractive work. But the JJ composition is pretty good!

Great stuff!

Indeed. I love Schumann's chamber music. I need to explore his lieder and solo piano works in-depth, though.

NP:

Hahn
Études latines
Ian Bostridge, Stephen Varcoe
The London Schubert Chorale
Stephen Layton, choirmaster
Graham Johnson, piano

I've been loving this disc, too.

I also acquired this disc and have been trying to find time to listen to it.

Operafreak

Prokofiev: Symphonies Nos. 1 & 2

São Paulo Symphony Orchestra (OSESP), Marin Alsop
The true adversary will inspire you with boundless courage.

Last work of the night:

Ravel
Gaspard de la nuit
Argerich

This is still the Gaspard to beat. I've heard many fine ones, but none of them match Argerich. It's too bad she didn't record Miroirs or Le Tombeau de Couperin. She did record Sonatine, which is a lovely piece of course.

Morning listening:

"Music at the Reformation", which includes the Mass for four voices.

Music by John Bull on disc 8 of the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book. Belder's Bull is also quite good.

Bruckner: Symphony No.8
Munich Philharmonic, Celibidache

Musical forces don't come much more gigantic than Celi at the helm of a Bruckner symphony. Glorious blazing climaxes, dark subterranean rumblings, yearnings straining wildly at the leash, probably my favourite Bruckner 8. In his unique alchemic way Celi allows you to hear details in the score with such clarity, it's almost like hearing it with the fresh ears of a child. Wonderful.

This being Celi, you do need to set aside a small portion of your life to listen to it though ...  8)  Go, Celi!

More outstanding work from the Frankfurt Radio Symphony -- recorded live yesterday! -- with cellist Truls Mørk and conductor Juraj Valčuha. Really, this group is on a roll with these broadcasts.

Puccini: Symphonic Prelude
Schumann: Cello Concerto
Respighi: Fountains of Rome
Respighi: Pines of Rome

Nice! I just bought the box set that collects these performances from Amazon Japan. He recorded the 4th and the 6th through the 8th. I've read somewhere that these performances are much better than their EMI counterparts.

Chuckling at the last sentences, and now wanting to hear this soon. Of the Celi recordings I have heard, his "leisurely" style seems to work the best with Bruckner.
