Amanda Maier.

The complete Works.

Violin concerto in D minor.

Gregory Maytan, Violin.
Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra, Andreas Stoehr

Impressive, and for me a discovery which came as a surprise. A beautiful D minor Violin Concerto, played with a lot of feeling and well recorded.

Still and again, music history holds untapped treasures and surprises. The Swedish label dbProductions is now taking on the works of Amanda Maier. She was married to Julius Röntgen (composer and cousin of the famous physicist Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen) and a close friend of Edvard Grieg, Johannes Brahms, Anton Rubinstein, Joseph Joachim and many other greats of her time.

The young Swede (her father, Carl Eduard Maier, came from Riedlingen) received training on violin and piano and eventually studied in Leipzig as a private student of Engelbert Röntgen, Carl Reinecke and Ernst Friedrich Richter. After the very successful premiere of her violin concerto in Halle an der Saale (1875) with herself as soloist, extensive concert tours followed. After her marriage in 1880 she no longer performed as a violinist, but continued to compose.

In Amsterdam, where she had moved with her husband, she ran a very impressive musical salon. She was in failing health from as early as 1887. In 1891 she wrote her last major work, the ambitious Piano Quartet in E minor. Presented here by Gregory Maytan, Bernt Lysell, Sara Wijk and Grammy-winning Ann-Sofi Klingberg on piano.

A firm called dB productions, never heard of them. I could not find on Amazon or JPC for that matter this complete set, only single discs.

Piano Quartet in E minor.

Gregory Maytan, Ann-Sofi Klingberg, Bernt Lysell, Sara Wijk.

An ongoing pleasure. No wonder that her husband Julius Rontgen was very proud of her accomplishments. She is a fab composer.

Glazunov: Concerto Ballata For Cello And Orchestra [Yang/Serebrier]

Gloriously lyrical and with the slightest hint of poignancy, the opening movement just sings wonderfully. I find the short, second movement to be dark and atmospheric. The tone of the third movement is basically the same as that of the second but the orchestral accompaniment is greatly augmented here. It has a wonderful atmosphere. The tone lifts in the final movement and I like its lighter atmosphere. The increase in tempo and the change in the nature of the orchestration also help to enhance the lighter tone.

This is my favourite Josquin recording. This isn't a comment on the performance, just that, for some reason, it touches the G spot.

Gloriously lyrical and with the slightest hint of poignancy.....................

Recently went through my Glazanov collection (about 16 discs, including the Serebrier box) selectively, picked half the discs from the Symphonies & Concertos, a couple of String Chamber works discs and some piano music w/ Stephen Coombs - did listen to the piano, violin and cello concertos.  Dave :)

Can you tell me which are his most imaginative and successful keyboard works?

Hi Mandryka - boy, you're asking the wrong guy - I don't have the repeated listening knowledge of judging the over 200 harpsichord works in Graupner's catalog HERE nor the musical ear/skills to answer your questions w/ any degree of authority; and I've not listened to the Soly discs in several years - all that I could do is re-listen to all and pick out my favorites, sorry.  Now, Soly writes her own booklet notes which can be read on the Analekta Website; also, all of her recordings are available on Spotify (or I assume other streaming sites - not sure which ones you use?) - now Que and I seem to be the few in the forum who bring up the Soly recordings and I'm sure he has listened more often and intently than me - hopefully, he might 'chime in' w/ some comments.  Not of much help but about all that I can offer at the moment.  Dave :)

Why, blimey, Harry, I thought you were that old-fashioned, physical-CD-only type of guy... Heartily congrats on your coming to terms with the 21st century.  :D

I saw someone post about the Strauss oboe concerto, so now I want to listen again. The 2nd movement has one of the most beautiful melodies. I also like the interaction between clarinet and oboe in the first movement.
