James MacMillan: Larghetto (2017) (Manfred Honeck / Frankfurt Radio Symphony, recorded 20 May 2021) - Lovely and majestic, with some great moments for the brass. Apparently commissioned by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in honor of Honeck, who is the current PSO music director.

Silvestrov: Hymne (2001) (Juraj Valčuha / Frankfurt Radio Symphony, live recording from 11 March 2022) - Beautiful, solemn piece, new to me, and quite gorgeously done by the Frankfurt ensemble and Valčuha.

(Also FYI: available from the same concert, Respighi's Pines and Fountains of Rome)

You have made me think to go back to this CD. So thanks for that.

A journey well worth taking again, methinks. Enjoy your re-listen.

Beautiful music! I hope you enjoyed it as much as I do.

The symphony is performed powerfully and with great feeling. Unfortunately there is some distortion in the loud passages of the scherzo. I switched from headphones to speakers for the last movement to alleviate the problem. Fricsay's treatment of the tumultuous pages before the becalmed closing bars could rise the dead. A great performance then, but not the last word as a recording of the work.

The fillers are two orchestral chestnuts I never tire of. Fricsay's Vltava has swift, flowing tempi that work perfectly for me - indeed in that regard it is identical to Toscanini's famous recording. A classic, practically definitive performance. Les Préludes is not universally liked - like many of his orchestral works actually. This performance, along with Karajan's 1967 recording sounds just perfect to me. The sound this time is fine (no distortion). All three recordings hail from the same period (end of 1959). The stereo is very wide, with pronounced left-right separation, which I like.

On my list of greatest recordings. Jessye Norman is wonderful, as is everyone else.

How do people here define "Maiden-Listen Monday"? Listening to a new piece of music, or a new recording? I'll try to participate later today!

Typically, a piece I am new to.
