'round Midnight : Quatuor Ebène (string quartet)

That is an absolutely searing account of Verklarte Nacht - probably the most intense version I've heard.
I can't approve of the misappropriation of Thelonious Monk's classic tune title though.  :-\

Stravinsky, Lyadov, Rimsky-Korsakov.
A most enjoyable disc with fine performances:
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

Spotted Horses

Listened to the first two movements of Casella Symphony No 2.

Wow. He doesn't hold anything back, does he? A bit like an overripe fruit. But I like it and la Vecchia's performance with the Rome Symphony is well done.

Sergei Rachmaninov
Piano Concerto No.2

But Monk's music is directly involved on the CD

At any rate, your description of the performance motivated me to finally order it.

More Petrassi. Works for chamber ensembles from this CD:

Traverso

Rameau

This is gorgeous ️music performed with verve, it all becomes even more beautiful when the traverso with its enchanting introverted sound  lingers wistful above the strings

I don't know that Sculthorpe disc but the Lilburn is terrific and 'Song of the Islands' is a great work.

The Sculthorpe disc is technically this one:

The box set just duplicates it, but in other cases rearranges some other recordings as they were originally issued. A fine set. And, yes, the Lilburn work is quite good, indeed.

I'm sure that I have all the Atterberg symphonies on different labels but I've never owned the CPO box and this seemed too good an offer to miss.

Oh, I do have that one John. I especially like Earth Cry.

Earth Cry would be my least favorite of the "Australian landscape" tone poems, but it's still a good piece. I absolutely adore Kakadu and Mangrove.
