Morning listening of a recent purchase:

Stylistically definitely an odd one out from halfway De Rore's career, an deviation from his Italian madrigalistic style. It's a pretty austere work, connecting to the Georgian plainchant tradition. The choice for instrumental accompaniment including cornets and trombones, something more common in earlier recordings by the Huelgas Ensemble, is quite unfortunate. There is still much to enjoy, in Amazon's Gio's words: a "hot and cold" performance, and I'm glad I got the 1st CD edition with full texts and translations.

I'll by waiting for a purely vocal performance by one of the many superb Early Music ensembles of today. Wouldn't mind if it were an Italian one.  :)

An excellent performance of an absolutely gorgeous Mass by Spanish Baroque composer, Francisco Valls. It's many, many years now since I discovered this work and it really is very beautiful.

I recently purchased that same recording in a domestic Spanish release, within the "Historic Monuments of Spanish Music" series published by the Education and Science Ministry.

It is indeed a gorgeous work!

Maybe. I've never heard another recording. Is this digital? Tape hiss on the old CRD recording is quite pronounced.

It's pretty new (2015). Other recordings are by Leonhardt/Nederlandse Bachvereniging (DHM, 1992) and Savall (Alia Vox, 2017).

This had been lingering on the "1st listening" pile for quite a long time...

Now I hear it, I wonder why...  :)
Because this collection of secular songs in German from early Baroque Dresden (1638) in a style adapted from Giulio Caccini and Jacopo Peri, is absolutely delectable.

Many moons ago I had the RCA box set of Previn's Vaughan Williams cycle on LP. I remember the 3rd as being particularly fine, and it is indeed a wonderful performance.

As a lesson in contrasts, the fourth makes a great coupling and this too is a very fine performance.

I love this recording that I discovered about fifty years ago. The oud with its wealth of overtones and resourceful inventive play make this my favorite piece of this gifted oud player.

A classic in my opinion

Yes, I'm aware I'm listening to a lot of the same music twice! Though it's interesting to also hear what Sibelius decided to leave out.

Looks very interesting. I will look for the recording.
A few years ago you posted a disc of Iranian/Persian music issued from Deutsche Hamonia Mundi. What was the name?

Kodály
Háry János Suite
Radio-Symphonie-Orchester Berlin
Fricsay

Simply put, this is the greatest performance of the Háry János Suite that I know. There are many other fine performances, but this one is so colorful, raw and has that sort folk-tale, rustic feel to it that's always difficult to put into words, so I'll put it another way: you can taste the paprika in this Fricsay performance. :)

Nice!
