Bernstein: Symphony No. 2

The splendid sound quality and the riveting performance make this recording stunningly glorious.

My favorite recording of this amazing work. Riveting performance, indeed!

Antheil: Piano Concerto No. 1

This may be a first listen, and what a fun listen it was. Tuneful, colourful, perky, delightfully orchestrated... a hit!

I need to get back to Antheil. When I revisited his music awhile back, I just thought him to be too derivative of Shostakovich and Prokofiev. Perhaps a reappraisal will be in order.

For some strange reason I never got immersed into this masterpiece till today. This recording seems unbeatable indeed.

It's undeniable that there are gestures that do sound like Prokofiev or Shostakovich, but the music is so entertaining that no one should care for it, and Antheil imprinted an attractive American flavour to the music which brings some freshness to it.
The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied. The terror IS REAL!

Very nice, Cesar. I'll definitely be reinvestigating Antheil's music and probably will end up buying some of his oeuvre which isn't represented in my own collection. I don't own much of his music at all --- the CPO releases and a few others.

That's probably my favorite American symphony. I'll need to check out that recording at some point.

Finishing off the night with three quirky, off-center piano concerti:

Ifukube
Ritmica ostinata
Hitoshi Kobayashi, piano
Yomiuri Nippon SO
Hiroshi Wakasugi

Janáček
Concertino, JW VII / 11
Josef Páleníček, piano
Czech PO Chamber Ensemble

Schulhoff
Concerto for piano & small orchestra
Jan Simon, piano
Prague RSO
Vladimír Válek

From these recordings -

I have good memories of the Schulhoff. One of my favorites works by him, actually.

Dohnányi: String Quartet No. 2 in D-flat major

You can't count many quartets in this key, and this one is a real gem of a piece. The last movement (it's cast in 3 movs.) is a slow and elegant theme with variations. The agitated section around 4:30 min. mark reminded me of the stormy passage in the slow movement of Schubert's String Quintet.

The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied. The terror IS REAL!

Schulhoff is a freakin' brilliant composer! Many of his works should be part of the mainstream repertoire, especially the 1920s works.

I have this as a download, otherwise too expensive for my taste. My champions are Gulda,Backhaus and the incomplete Gilels.
I like the EMI Kovacevich too  :)

Yes, my copy is also a download, Jan.

Continuing with Poulenc songs.

I'm now just past halfway through this album, dipping into the little collections, and it's been fabulous. The only thing better is knowing I have another 4 albums in the series to look forward to after this one.
Nobody has to apologise for using their brain.
