Johannes Brahms: Symphony No.3 in F major, op.90. Marin Alsop, London Philharmonic Orchestra

All I want to hear lately is Brahms and (especially) Mahler. This is a stellar performance of this beautiful symphony. I think I've heard Brahms' 4 symphonies more than anyone else's. Constant companion these past few years since I've been into classical music.

Nice to see the love for the Brahms symphonies.

Great to read - so what 3 pieces of Brahms would you take above all others!?

Linz

Haydn Symphonies 43 'Mercury' and 59 'Fire' Neville Marriner

Brian

A tale of two sides!
Side A is Villa-Lobos the cute miniaturist of sentimental melodies and virtuosic etudes.
Side B is "Rudepoema," the monstrous symphonic poem for piano that allows Nelson Freire to bust his fingers on all sorts of gnarly material.
Fun stuff both.

Linz

Vaughan Williams Symphony No. 3 'Pastoral' and No. 4 and Saraband 'Helen'

Brian

People were talking about the "Funeral March of a Marionette," which I haven't heard in 5-6 years, and certainly not performed by a real artist like this.

Loriod in Messiaen is a fairly safe option.
What think you of it?

Oh my goodness, coming at me with the hard hitting questions I see. Off the top of my head:

Piano Concerto No.2
3 Intermezzi, op.117
Symphony No.2

I don't know if I can stand behind these selections for the rest of my life, but they will have to do for now  ;D

vers la flamme

Gustav Mahler: Symphony No.2 in C minor, "Resurrection". Georg Solti, London Symphony Orchestra & Chorus, with Helen Watts and Heather Harper, vocal soloists

I should know better than to play this symphony over and over again, but I can't get enough!

Linz

Mahler Symphony 5 with Bernstien and the Wiemer Philharmoniker

VonStupp

Tōru Takemitsu
Wind Horse
Sakura, Wings, Small Sky

Toshio Hosokawa
The Lotusblossom

Michio Mamiya
Composition for Chorus No. 1

Jō Kondō
Motet Sub Rosa

SWR Vokalensemble - Marcus Creed

I have been looking forward to hearing this one, just out of sheer curiosity.
