CD 5

Shostakovich
Symphony № 4 in c minor, Op. 43

Rec. 24 May 1987

A splendid account of one of my favorite works, and further refutation of the canard that an excellent performance of Shostakovich requires a Russian orchestra struggling with malnutrition.

I do enjoy that set ... and incidentally:

Shostakovich
Symphony № 7 in C, Op. 60 « Leningrad »

Rec. 8 Jan 1968

This recording (predating that of the Op. 43 by 20 years) illustrates my point: it suffers both from inferior sonics, and an orchestra which strains at times. Spirited performance, but the recording cannot be a first choice IMO.

Continuing onto Symphony No.8 on the same disc. I believe this is my first listen to the work, though I've played the Bulgarian Dances that fill the remainder of the disc a couple of times before. It sounds very good at the moment. Very dark, spacious music, not worlds apart from the likes of Dmitri Shostakovich and Alfred Schnittke, whose musics I suspect may have been influential on the composer. Thank you to whomever I saw listening to this disc several months ago, prompting me to purchase it, for introducing me to some interesting music.

Did I enjoy the piece nonetheless? Yes.

I do need a change, though:

Schubert, Franz - Piano Duets - Four Hands w/ Eschenbach and Frantz (from the 70s) - Brilliant licensed these recordings and offered a 4-disc box - listening now on Spotify - not sure that I'd listen to this music much vs. Schubert's solo works for piano - don't know?  There are other options of single discs up to a 7-CD box w/ Vermuelen and friend on a fortepiano - although attractive sounding I just bought Vermuelen's 12-disc box of the solo pieces - probably enough for me -   Dave

Gustav Mahler: Symphony No.9 in D major. John Barbirolli, Berlin Philharmonic

This recording is really growing on me. I listened to the Karajan/Berlin Live 9th earlier this week, which I love—but this one is hitting harder at present. Barbirolli is a very fine Mahler conductor. From this box I still have yet to hear the 6th (a controversial one), and the 1st (literally have never heard anything about this recording).

Just what I needed. And the Stravinsky-into-Martinů segue was especially nice. The Schat was a good piece (I vaguely wonder if that name is, well, scatological) and now I know that it's cool to write a symphony in one movement that runs under a quarter of an hour.

The RVW is outstanding, and is the 16 soloist version. It's from a 2010 Proms concert.
The Wagner (currently playing) is also good, but not at the same level. It's from a 2012 Proms concert.
The Lewis ends the CD; it is a work given its premiere at last year's Proms. It involves orchestra and electronics, and the description in the magazine makes me think I'll either love it or hate it once I get to it.

No worries there... :): a "schat" is a treasure.
And a "schatje" is nick name, a petname for your lover, wife, child, mistress, dog, cat, canary....
