Ruth Gipps.
Orchestral Works, volume II.
Symphony No. 3.
Oboe Concerto.
Chanticleer.
Death on a pale Horse.
Juliana Koch, Oboe.
BBC Philharmonic, Rumon Gamba.

This is a wonderful release, long awaited by many, and finally arrived. It fulfils every hunkering for her music, and can be bought instantly by those that admire the music, and the intellect behind it. Terrific performances by all involved, and the usual good sound spectrum by Chandos.
Still not arrived here Harry  >:D
Maybe delayed by postal strikes.

Even more bells were ringing. I am already asked by a few shops to play Father Christmas, but I declined that obviously. My few brown reddish hairs will soon be gone, although they put up a brave fight. My beard was almost twice as long a few years ago, but that prevented me to step on a bike, even though I tied it up properly it became unstuck, with all the consequences. I am vehemently against birds nesting in my beard so this I prevented with all means at my disposal. My friends and family are used to this beard and call me frequently "The Monk" who walks in silence, so be it, I am content with that, less hassle and more silence for me to listen to music.
I enjoyed your story immensely. Maybe we should call the members of the Legue for Beards society and compare notes

We almost look alike, even the beard, brother! You have more hair on top and you are younger.

I once had a beard but nothing like the magnificent two featured here. Anyway, I was ordered to shave it off. So, that was the end of that. I was reminded here of:

Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

I played it three time in a row, so beautiful, starting with Chanticleer, and then the third movement of the Oboe concerto,  the Third Symphony is a miracle of beauty. I am so bowled over by this talented female. I read that after one performance it was never performed again. Sigh :o

On the 70th birthday of Kaija Saariaho, watching this fantastic livestream from the Helskinki Philharmonic with Susanna Mälkki and cellist Anssi Karttunen. The Whittall piece was wonderful (he's new to me), as was the first Saariaho. Coming up, more Saariaho and the Sibelius 4th Symphony.

Spotted Horses

Piano Sonata KV310, van Oort.

Marvelous, I like the way he approaches the music and I like the sound of the instrument. However, The Zacharias on a modern piano is a miracle and was no less brilliant in this work.

Absolutely agree - I thought this was a tremendous disc.  The Oboe Concerto is gorgeously played and a fabluously assured piece given Gipps was about 20 when she wrote it.  Direct compare and contrast in simple talent terms with other composers of this period (some of whom are winning Grammys.....) shows without a doubt where the real ability lies.

Astonishly Gipps was a good enough oboist to have a job in the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra AND good enough a pianist to have been the soloist in the 2 Brahms Concertos!!!!!!

Nice! Good evening, Ilaria.

Here, sticking to Spanish music. Piano pieces by Rodolfo Halffter, played by Edison Quintana (CD 3 of the set pictured below).

Apparently, it was posted second class to me yesterday, so I hope to receive it early next week.
In the meantime, I'm enjoying the Serenade to Music played on the organ - it seems to be a very effective and beautifully recorded version - it's a piece that I don't usually enjoy:

This CD could be a candidate for the 'Worst Cover Art' thread.

That's a fine and sometimes very moving symphony - especially the Bach quotation.

That's a very fine performance, arguably better than any of Handley's recordings of the symphonies, which I find good but in no case a first choice.
