Haydn: String Quartets Op. 76-Chiaroscuro Quartet

The true adversary will inspire you with boundless courage.

vandermolen

Vaughan Williams: 'Dona Nobis Pacem' Colorado SO, Litton
Sadly, just as relevant now as it was in the mid 1930s when it was composed:
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

vandermolen

Casella: Symphony No.2
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

Disc one.  Papillons and Kinderszenen are both superb, but the Op 11 sonata sounded better than memory suggested, especially in the wonderful Scherzo.
The universe is change; life is opinion. - Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

People would rather believe than know - E.O. Wilson

This is a superb recording of lesser known repertoire. The all-French cast has a splendid diction* and the music is delightful. Massenet at probably his most intimate and lyrical. Mostly on poems by Armand Sylvestre and Georges Boyer. Highly recommended (Rafael, I'm looking at you!)

Such a cool cover art!

I found it rather Britten-esque, which is (unsurprisingly!) a good thing; Paulus has an obvious knack for big choral writing, and his children's choir was especially effective. Orchestrally, I particularly enjoyed his use of percussion and the harp.

It was my first listen and I think a lot of it sailed over my head (and through my less-than-attentive ears). I'll definitely be listening to it again later today/tomorrow, as even my wayward ears could tell that there were many very beautiful moments, treating of a very serious subject with profound emotion.

Interesting, thanks.

Yes. I like how the ending is hopeful, but then shows that we are not there yet.
(I was fortunate to perform this in college, Clarinet 1. It was one of the highlights!)

Hauntingly beautiful... the more I listen to Poulenc, the more he becomes one of my favorites.
So much great music, so little time...
