Stereo versions of some of the works on the previous CD, plus an excellent performance of the Respighi, which he later recorded again for DG. All the recordings were made in 1958, 1959 and 1960.

I just discovered this oratorio, Quo vadis, by Polish composer Feliks Nowowiejski

Exceptional choirs, splendid orchestration, everything in this oratorio is impressive.

Bonjour, Operafreak

Is it because you saw my nickname, which made you think of Saint George?   ;)

I've had this on repeat several times since first listening to it the day before yesterday. I simply can't have enough of this gorgeous music featuring one memorable tune after another, brimming with joie de vivre and superbly orchestrated. That's music that literally makes me happy. I can hardly wait for the second volume.

So far, Paul Lincke and Nino Rota have been my major 2023 discoveries --- by Jove, this year starts gloriously.  8)

Wrapping up with 15.  I'm glad I discovered Daniel Rowland, and by extension the iteration of the Brodsky with him as first violin.  This set does not displace the Danel as my favorite, nor does it quite match a few others (eg, the Borodin), but it surpasses the first Brodsky and more important than mental comparisons, it compels while listening, its flaws both easily forgivable and instantly forgettable.

Quote from: Symphonic Addict on January 05, 2023, 10:27:39 AMThey're not groundbreaking compositions, but the craftsmanship is there. The Piano Trios 1 and 2 do deserve more exposition, very attractive pieces. Don't you like the Symphonic Variations? Another solid work of his, so is the Symphony No. 4, and the Elegy on the Death of Brahms is not bad either.

The Symphonic Variations is probably my favorite piece that I know by Parry. That said, it doesn't necessarily top my list of symphonic variations alongside other works in the genre by Brahms, Dvorak, Elgar, Respighi, Frumerie, Braga Santos, Ginastera, Kodaly, Copland, Cowell, etc etc... ;)

Hi, Dave! IMO one of the greatest advantages of digital is that one doesn't have to cull anything. If you run out of space, you just buy another hard drive. I have three external hard drives already, plus two internal ones, and I plan on buying two others, one internal, the other external. All seven of them will fit in a briefcase.  8)

I've listened to this once or twice, but not for a few years. It's great! I especially liked the 2nd and 3rd movements (of 6), since they contain the most beautiful moments. Hanson seems to be a composer who understands the beauty of simplicity. The final movement is very exciting.

I really like his sixth (and the paired third) too. Glad to hear it went down well this time.

Thanks Andrei - I own over a dozen external HD spinners and SSDs, mainly for backups of my computers - have a couple dedicated to music (mostly ripped MP3s or WAVs) - years ago as I've culled out CDs I thought of just ripping them, so understand the process and rationale - maybe just old age laziness -  ;D  Dave
