For me CD VI, is a firm favourite from this box, so well sung and recorded, and soothing to my stressed mind.

Very good to read this, Karl. :)

Cyril Scott: Symphony No.1
This Symphony also reminds me, a bit, of Stanford:
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

Music in Germany, from Schutz to Bach.
CD II.
Compilations from many labels and performances.
Accent, Harmonia Mundi, Zig Zag Territoires.

Despite the fact that the whole set is a compilation of bits and bobs, the variance and excellence of performances makes it for me nevertheless attractive listening pleasure. And of course that book is a joy to read. Henri Ledroit might not be my favourite counter tenor, but in this skip is a useful tool to use.

Helmer Alexandersson.
Overture in C minor.
Symphony No. 2 in G minor.
Uppsala Chamber Orchestra, Paul Magi.

I forgot totally how beautiful this music is. Since my drive through in my collection I discover things anew.

The Uppsala Chamber Orchestra, led by Estonian conductor Paul Mägi, makes a fine job of this live recording of a Swedish late Romantic whose works are very much influenced by contemporary German symphonic music in addition to clear Scandinavian influences. Thus, orchestral treatment and thematic development follow models such as Bruckner and Stenhammar, with Alexandersson cultivating an individual writing style characterized by clouded harmonies, dominant strings, brusque themes, and a pull toward the pathetic.

The man who is something is whoever thinks he is nothing.

Symphony No. 1 "RiverRun"
Symphony no. 2. Orchestration completed by Sebastian Currier.

Russian PO, Paul Polivnick.

Last played in 2007, I find the Symphonies to be very good music. Quite forgotten how good. Sound and performance is top notch, apart from a humming conductor who pops up every now and again.

New arrival - first listen. Fabulous.
I guess that most people will buy this for Elgar's Cello Concerto transposed for the Viola, but not me!
This is the best performance I have heard of Bloch's Suite for Viola and Orchestra. It seems a much greater work than I have ever realised before:
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

I like these symphonies as well, especially the 'River Run' Symphony. I also have this recording:
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

Returning to a project of listening to Poulenc's Piano music in the Le Sage set.

Today I'm starting the second disc, with the first ten of Poulenc's fifteen improvisations for piano.

Charming pieces of a minute or two. I normally don't take to miniatures, but these are captivating.
There are simply two kinds of music, good music and the other kind. - Duke Ellington
