JS Bach: Three Motets BWV 225/226/227 [Thomas]

Recorded in 1958/59 these are old school presentations but are still, nonetheless, fine interpretations throughout.
It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and leave no doubt.

This was an excellent Hoffmeister -- more than that, a revelation. What it revealed was a sort of bitter sweet quality to the music, a cheerful melody in one voice being modified emotionally by things going on in other voices. Hagen have the hang of this quartet, which I'm convinced is a major high point of 18th century chamber music.

590 doesn't interest me as much, and Hagen did nothing to change that. Mozart's late faux naive style isn't my cup of tea.

Schoenberg: Verklärte Nacht [Prometheus Ensemble]

I find this to be a terrific presentation and arrangement. It is very intimate and emotion laden. It is also wonderfully conversational in nature. There is also great tension to be felt throughout.

There is a new version of these pieces by the Het Collectief on Alpha records.  The steuermann/Transfigured Night has been recorded quite a lot - it's a fine transcription I think.

Delicate, lush and deliciously romantic. The music, I mean. Not David Porcelijn. Though he might be too for all I know :) Nice!

Earlier today, on radio and TV, live from the Koncertgebouw/A'dam:

Groot Omroepkoor
Marcus Creed, dirigent
Rowan Pierce, sopraan
Guy Cutting, tenor

R. Vaughan Williams - Serenade to music
G.F. Händel - Ode for St. Cecilia's Day, HWV 76

Lovely! even,if I do prefer RVW's Serenade with 16 soloists.
