Quote from: Traverso on February 24, 2023, 04:32:37 AMHi Harry, I'm listening to it for the first time and it's love at first hearing. Van Asperen's playing is lively and entertaining, in summary, a must for those who love French harpsichord music. I enjoy it and like almost no  other music, harpsichord music may fill my heart with joy.

Thank you, even more of a incentive to order it.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Florestan

A composer new to me whose lyrical, melodic, balanced style I quite like. He strains neither the listener's nerves (tunes aplenty in his music) nor their patience (at most half-an-hour-long synphonies). He once commented that his first desire was to entertain and please, and compose listener-friendly "modern" music. I'd say he succeeded big time.

"Ja, sehr komisch, hahaha,
ist die Sache, hahaha,
drum verzeihn Sie, hahaha,
wenn ich lache, hahaha! "

Recording : Symphony No. 3 (Zweden - 2002)
Performers : Jaap van Zweden, Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra

I have had that Brahms box set for well over a decade. It was such a bargain price when released. The quality of the performances overall are quite good.

Mile Alexseyevich Balakirev.
Complete Piano works, original works and Transcriptions
Volume V.
Nicholas Walker, Piano.

Always a delight these works by Balakirev. Well composed, included his transcriptions of works by other composers, for they are also masterly done. I never regarded him much before in this field but Walker convinced me otherwise. Why not try it yourself?

Beethoven: String Quartet No. 12 Op. 127 [Budapest String Quartet]

This is a strong and assertive performance from the opening chords of the first movement. The music is earnestly played, oftentimes with gusto where appropriate.
The atmosphere of the slow movement is wonderful. It is lyrical, serene and poignant and it is played with great delicacy, feeling and sensitivity.
The Scherzo is a wonderful breezy and animated affair. This performance feels like an excited conversation between a group of friends.
The final movement is also assertively played but not aggressively so. The music is approached in an energetic and invigorating way without being over intense. They build up to a fine conclusion.

An interesting feature of the often mentioned sound quality of this set is that I find that the dry, ageing acoustic throughout the recording actually helps to tighten up and illustrate the individual voices for me.

Harry - love Walker in these works and have all 6 volumes (bought before Grand Piano released the box below - contents HERE) - about 40 Euros at Presto and JPC - cheaper elsewhere?  Dave :)

This all Berlioz recital was released twenty years now and is interesting as much for the repertoire as for the singing. Alagna gives us tenor arias from all Berlioz's operatic works, both Iopas and Enée from Les Troyens, Bénédict from Béatrice et Bénédict, Cellini from Benvenuto Cellini, as well as excerpts from La Damnation de Faust, L'enfance du Christ and Lélio, which also has Gérard Depardieu providing narration. Depardieu also contributes to a rarity here, the early Huits scènes de Faust, where Alagna sings a tenor version of Méphistophélès' Serenade, to the accompaniment of a guitar. Alagna's then wife, Angela Gheorghiu is brought in to sing the duet from La Damnation de Faust with Alagna.

Berlioz is one of my favourite composers and I really enjoyed this CD for both the programming and the singing. My ony criticism is that Alagna is recorded a bit too close and the orchestra is a little too recessed.

Going in-depth on Op 127!

I have a notion to listen to the Budapest Quartet's earlier recording, which is only available as a download these days.

Christian Erbach.
Complete Organ works.
Volume V.
Michael Tomadin, Organ.
Instrument:
Graziadio Antegnati 1565 at the Santa Barbara Church, Mantova.
Temperament: Meantone.
Pitch: 466 Hz at 20 degrees.

No doubt here, it is a fine organ, with a good sound and perfectly balanced. It sounds fluently, and effortless, with some beautiful stops which sounds magnificent. No less than 312 original pipes from Ategnati out of a total of 656 in the wind chest. Such instruments make me very happy! The organ is well captured in the recording, and Tomadin's playing is beyond reproach.

Recorded live at the Aldeburgh Festival in 1971, this recital includes some rarities, such as Master Barringcloe's Jehova Reigns and Graziani's Cantata, Velut palma. There are some suprises in the Schubert selection too. All in all, a very nice disc, which was give away free with BBC Music Magazine.
