Nope. Symphony #5 isn't for me. I don't believe in Purgatory, but if I did, this would be the soundtrack.

I wasn't expecting this reaction in the least.  ;D  ;)
The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied.

Beethoven Op 127 and 131 Prazak Q

Oh boy, I love those first two movements of Op 127 so much that I will relisten with the Vegh Quartet.

Lehár: Two piano sonatas and Fantasy for piano

These three works were composed before Lehár was 20 years old and I must say they succeeded my expectations, particularly the Sonata in F major. The another sonata, in D minor, has a more ambitious scope and could be a tad long for its material, but there's no denying it's well-crafted, playful and memorable as well.

Well as long as you didn't refer to the Really Bad Place, we don't need to abandon all hope.

Third time listening to this. Very pleasant and professional and totally unmemorable mainstream Romantic concertos.

Excellent playing and superb sound. The 24/192 Qobuz stream makes me wonder what the DSD256 download would sound like since that's the native resolution. (Not sure I'm $30 curious, though!)

Vasks: String Quartets 1-3

On revisiting this cycle I'm much more impressed than ever. The first quartet turned out more dissonant than I remembered and that is a compliment, actually. Tomorrow Nos. 4 and 5.

Not quite catching the connection to Purgatory, to me the 5th symphony reminds more of the never-ending soundtrack to a washing powder ad.

In appearance, maybe. But I'm not versed in theology :o

Rachmaninov: Trio No.2 "Elegiac"

Svetlanov (fine pianist) was a passionate advocate for Rachmaninov which comes across, abetted by Kogan and Luzanov, strongly. I cannot imagine this piece played with more passion.
You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

I opened the door people rushed through and I was left holding the knob - Bo Diddley.

A few more items from the Dohnanyi solo piano music set with Roscoe, Wintereigen, and a pastorale

Very attractive, expressive music.

A bit more solo piano music from Koechlin in the Korstick performances in the SWR set. Several Nouvelles sonatinas.

Deathly dull. Revisiting some of the works with Mirare Guillaume, I find the music comes alive. I am concluding that I don't connect with Korstick's style in Koechlin (although I've enjoyed Korstick's work with other composers, most noteworthy Martinu solo piano music).

Two more superb symphonies by Wellesz. I like how he handled the contrapuntal element to not make them too academic and give them cohesion and propulsion when needed.

I resisted my listening notes and was reminded that I was very impressed with Wellesz Symphonies 1-5. I resumed with the sixth today. I did enjoy it thoroughly, but my notes suggest I was more taken with the earlier works. Maybe Wellesz' style changed, or maybe my brain changed.

This is one of the most attractive recordings in this box

Another spin would be the last thing you need 😂😁

I know it's just me but I can't get on with the vocal focus. RVW's #7 is more than enough for me, sometimes...

It depends. The vocal parts in Mahler or Górecki work very well. With other composers, sometimes don't work at all.

Not for me, I'm afraid.

It's buried deep somewhere in my collection. I've tried at least twice to listen to it, and bailed out early in the first movement each time. I don't recall exactly why - I've not heard it for at least twenty years, and may have suppressed any specific memories - but if l had to describe my reaction it would be:

No... NO, NO, NO!

Not very helpful, l know. I should maybe give it another try, perhaps specific objections will formulate.

Today continuing w/ Niels Gade's Violin Concerto & Sonatas on the recordings below - both with Christina Åstrand on the Dacapo label - Gade was a virtuoso violinist (as was his son, Axel) - as to style mid-19th century Romantic in the company of Mendelssohn and Schumann - as for the attached reviews, all quite good but 'second tier' is always present between the lines; however, the violinist is excellent and the music enjoyable to my ears.  Dave :)
