I liked it when listening to it, but as it is with me and Norgard, I never feel keen enough to listen any more than that. I only listen to him about once a decade.

That's true. Yours being an island country --- the sea is a prominent feature for sure.

Trying to remember:  Not more than 60 miles from what I recall?

Quote from: Irons on May 30, 2025, 06:15:00 AMDvorak: Cello Concerto.

Recorded in Leipzig 28th March 1956.

Hermann Abendroth a legendary conductor (not only because he conducted without arms!).
Haven't heard that one before now and knew little about him (just did a quick google); what did you think of the recording?

Hoelscher is very collectable and expensive amongst vinyl-heads. His set of Bach cello suites sells for big bucks. Hoelscher's entry after a longish orchestral introduction in the Dvorak concerto gives a clue why.
You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

I opened the door people rushed through and I was left holding the knob - Bo Diddley.

Could it be a migraine?  Or allergies?  :(

I'll see if I can find an upload on YT.  And after about a five second googling, youch!

Dehydration, I believe. Passing now, after lots of water, painkillers and an hour's sleep. Long day, today.

Hope you are OK?

I've been having a horrible headache whenever it rains, including yesterday. I think it might be due to mold or maybe a pressure change.

Quote from: Der lächelnde Schatten on May 29, 2025, 07:42:39 PMI agree. It's a work that can weigh you down, but is a rather cathartic listening experience. That Wit recording is one of my favorites, because of the understated playing. I prefer it to the much-lauded Upshaw/Zinman recording on Nonesuch. There's something about having all Polish forces that just kind of feels right to my ears. I'll have to make it a point to revisit some of Górecki's music at some point.

Most definitely, I can't help but tear up a little.

Both performances work for me, and probably I'd slightly prefer the famous Zinman/Upshaw for the familiarity I have with it.
The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied.

Being smitten with string trios lately. This is a stupendous twofer of French trios that includes the ones by Jean Françaix, Jean Cras, Henri Tomasi, Robert Casadesus, Gabriel Pierné, Émile Goué and Gustave Samazeuilh. Only the Tomasi and Casadesus for now. Positively impressed. The Tomasi has such an alluring piquancy and personality. A remarkable piece. The Casadesus is more refined, but not without witty ideas, and again, I was reminded of Villa-Lobos (in the first movement).
