Outside of Atterberg's 3rd and 6th symphonies, I've probably heard the others once. I'm sure @kyjo will give me a good tongue-lashing for this.

I was hugely impressed with this symphony. I'll probably revisit again tomorrow. The middle movement was flat-out gorgeous.

This Engeset set on Naxos of Grieg's complete orchestral works is outstanding. Honestly, all of the Grieg orchestral sets I own are first-rate: Järvi (DG), Ruud (BIS) and Aadland (Audite). Although, the Aadland isn't as complete as the others.

NP: Grieg Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 16



This is one of those works I've purposely avoided wearing out because its a workhorse or, at least, it used to be. I'm not sure how often it gets programmed in the concert hall these days or really what pianist is taking it up as part of their repertoire. Anyway, this is a fantastic performance. Håvard Gimse is a remarkable pianist.

Recorded: 2014, Altomonte Saal, Stift St Florian, Austria.

This music definitively wakes you up, with very prominent Brass and invigorating playing. Nothing wrong about that. It is music from the Southern German-Italian intellectual world. Compositions of five-minutes, often small-scale, and contrast-rich pieces, are on the one hand presenting their harmonic richness in a pleasantly dense ensemble sound, and on the other hand taking every liberty in the solo sections of the Violins to give wings to the spirit, which is a case that can be well trusted to Letzbor, and he is making the most of it. The recording is clear as a bell, in the fine acoustics of the Altomonte Saal.

Complete Trio sonatas.
L'Acheron.
Recorded: église Notre-Dame de Centeilles, 2018.

Lots of fine sound variety, with soothing silky tones from the Gamba. There is immense richness in these Trio sonatas and wonderfully accentuated in the performance. They approach these compositions  with remarkable sensitivity, allowing themselves themes and turns of phrase to blossom, without attacking the delicate structures of these sonatas, awakening longings and a endless flow of this music. Fine recording.

Recorded 2013, at Merton Chapel, Oxford.

Impressive singing in Merton chapel that has a fine acoustic. The Marian Consort can be hit or miss, but apart from some microphones that cause some slight distortion, when the Females put some volume behind their voice. not troublesome, but that shows how important it is to install them in the right place. Jean Maillard is a Franco-Flemish composer I do not often encounter, which is an omission on my side for he composed beautiful music. A French composer from the Renaissance obviously, but of his life we know next to nothing. Might have lived and worked in Paris, and might have worked for the French court, and might have turned Protestant, but still we no know nothing about him. Only Six Masses have survived which is also next to nothing. Next in line would be his Motets...if I can find them
