Not only smart, but also capable of empathy — something that, unfortunately, has been lost in some other parts of the formerly free world.

Rudolf Barshai
WDR Sinfonieorchester
Brilliant Classics

Coincidentally I pulled the Barshai set from the shelves last month. I'm not a huge fan of 1,2,3 and 12, therefore I only have them from that Barshai set. That 12th symphony is often trashed as bombastic and thematically weak, but I quite enjoyed hearing it again.

Donizetti: String Quartets 4-6

These performances are much more to my taste. They don't sound pale as performed on period instruments.

The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied.

Janacek: Glagolitic Mass

A desert-island work for me. I remember the very first time I listened to this unique mass more than 10 years ago. I couldn't believe my ears, a new world of sonorities, rhythms, melodies, had open before me. This is a most satisfactory performance to boot.

The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied.

I quite enjoyed this strange orchestral music 8) .

I hear some members here often calling not to mix music with "politics" or something along those lines — as if music is listened to by disembodied idiots who've never looked out the window, have no idea what's going on in the world, and don't understand a thing about what moves people or why.

Anyway — I'm saying this because last night was quiet. I only heard a single distant explosion in my sleep. This morning, everything feels still. The music of Heinrich Schütz — quiet and translucent — fits it perfectly.

A new Vincente Lusitano recording:

This Portuguese Renaissance composer of mixed Portuguese/African heritage impressed me before through a recording of his motets by the Marian Consort (Linn Records). Both recordings present a selection from Lusitano's only surviving music collection: the Liber primus epigramatum, issued in Rome in 1551.There are clear Franco-Flemish influences in his musical style. Anyway, fascinating and warmly recommended! Arte Minima's performances feature instruments (recorders) while Marian Consort is a cappella but with a big(ger) choir. I did not an A_B comparison to establish the amount of overlap.

That's a wonderful recording of really great music!

I quite like the Portuguese ensemble Arte Minima (I predict more excellent recordings), so moved on to this:

The Ensemble Arte Minima takes us on a musical journey to Coimbra, the former capital of the Portuguese kingdom: the Augustinian monk and canon Francisco de Santa Maria worked at the three musical centres of the city in the 16th century - the Santa Cruz monastery, the cathedral and the university. The ensemble Arte Minima, consisting of a four-part recorder consort and four vocalists, is committed to bringing back to life the lost musical treasures of the Portuguese Renaissance. This CD presents the Missa "O beata Maria" by this hitherto completely forgotten composer. Francisco de Santa Maria used the motet of the same name by Pedro Guerrero as a model for his mass, which opens the programme. The Ensemble Arte Minima intersperses instrumental works by Antonio Carreira and Pedro de Escobar.

PS Definitely worth a listen, also because of the beautiful performances. Which elevate music of good, even if not outstanding, quality.
