I might do a back-to-back traversal of the recordings I own of Déserts. It's one of my favorite works from Varèse and for this fact alone is why I'm careful not to overplay it. Remarkable piece and the performance here from Nagano/Orchestre National de France is top-notch.

CD 1 of this double CD

The lead off work, Yizkor, was used with the title Evocation on the BIS CD of that name with Itamar Zorman and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. The performance here is about 5 minutes longer, in part because it uses a candenza by the composer, in preference to a cadenza by Jascha Heifetz (and which was apparently used on the BIS recording).
