Mister Sharpe

Tomasow was a violinist with a smooth-as-silk technique who also enjoyed a conducting career (Asst. Conductor of the Baltimore Symphony, andalso headed-up the National Symphony Orchestra, '46-50).  He was in the Vanguard (for whom he recorded) of the Vivaldi revival with his performance of the Four Seasons in '57.  Died all-too-young at 47. Oddly, he's not accorded an entry in New Grove.

An Ewald Kooiman recital of French music at Poitiers - the interesting thing for me is a Grigny hymn. Maybe too cautious to be interesting.

Now listening on the stereo, I love this symphony!

If you like Bach on the lute-harpsichord, Robert Hill did a few really nice recordings in the Hänssler Bach series: "Works for Lute-harpsichord", "Original & Adaptation", "Bach as Teacher".

Symphonic Addict

Keeping impressed by the already unfathomable talent that Martinu displayed in his early period. This ballet is nothing but luminous and tinged with a naïve, child-like character that simply can't fail to enchant. Kudos to Toccata for bringing these scores to life. A phenomenal recording.

The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied.

Quote from: prémont on June 28, 2025, 09:21:43 AMListening to an organ mass at home can never recreate the authentic context. So I seldom listen to Grigny's entire organ messe in one sitting, and also for that reason the chant has less importance for me, and I often skip it.

I suppose it's just as silly to listen to a symphony orchestra or an opera at home, isn't it?:)

Honestly, I'm not even sure where the nearest pipe organ is, assuming one could actually catch an organ mass there. Most likely, it would involve booking a flight.

Scelsi - Aiôn

A slow moving procession of awesome notes and percussion.

The most impressive Bach-on-the-lute-harpsichord recording I have heard is (sans comparaison) this by Peter Waldner:

Yes, of course. But many of us have no other choice if we want to hear the music and certain musicians.

Luckily, we mastered the art of suspending disbelief long ago and can now cheerfully pretend we're hearing music not from electronic devices, but live while traveling through centuries and countries along the way! :)

Messiaen's organ music is difficult for me to connect with, the miracle just hasn't happened. The complex rhythms, unusual harmonies, and harsh sonorities make his organ works feel closed for me. I can sense their uniqueness, but they still remain outside my reach.

Traverso

Bach

As said a really fine recording.
