That piece and the Arnold are my favorite guitar concertos ever.
The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied. The terror IS REAL!

Dutilleux: Symphony No. 1

Cracking piece, absolutely extraordinary in every respect, brilliantly performed and recorded here. The music is so ominous and absorbing that it catches your attention effortlessly. The orchestral piano in the 2nd movement provides a tremendous effect, so do the strings which are employed in a manner that somehow reminded me of Nielsen a bit. Love this work so much.

I believe I've played the Kalinnikov. F sharp minor?...

J.S. Bach: Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ, BWV 177

A fine work. I continue to inch slowly towards the end of the series (Facebook reminded me recently of the 11th anniversary of buying the last box  :o )

This recording by an Italian group is quite enjoyable, with some rare repertoire.
Their later Brumel recording on Naxos unfortunately failed spectacularly due to ill advised sound engineering...

This volume is for me the odd one out in the series so far.... For me the programming doesn't work, with a mix of secular and sacred works.
The - incomplete - inclusion of an Appenzeller mass is quite frustrating... Luckily there is streaming to enjoy what is still on offer, but I didn't and wouldn't buy it on disc.

Quote from: Madiel on December 05, 2025, 01:17:03 AMWelcome to modern German trends in opera staging.

Other people do this as well, but the Germans really do seem to have a particular fondness for thinking "no, we couldn't just possibly tell the original story".

Thanks! I didn't know about these German trends. I am not even against weird ideas. They just make following the "original story" more challenging for newbies.
Spatial distortion is a serious problem deteriorating headphone listening.

Chamber concerto in F (for viola d'amore, 2 oboes, bassoon and 2 horns), RV 97
Care selve, amici prati, RV 671

One of the best chamber concertos I think (not that I've been keeping notes across the other several albums, but this impressed me).

The cantatas on this disc just have basso continuo as the accompaniment, so there's an intimate feel. Laura Polverelli acquits herself pretty well in this first one.

Medtner: 12 Goethe songs, op.15

Medtner clearly had a thing for Goethe, as there are three whole opuses devoted to his poetry.

I'm not paying any attention to the poetry for these purposes, just giving the music a spin. There is apparently one other complete recording of op.15 besides this one, as well as other scattered recordings that might yield better results than here.

Irons's listening choice (subconsciously) caught on....  :)

Weber, Carl Maria von (1786-1826) - most famous for his operas,  he had a modest output of non-operatic music, which includes two symphonies, two concertos and a quintet for clarinet, a bassoon concerto, a horn concertino, two concertos etc piano and orchestra, piano pieces; and many pieces that featured the clarinet, usually written for the virtuoso clarinetist Heinrich Baermann (Source).

At the moment, I own two 'modern' versions of the clarinet concertos and quintet, plus two other recordings on period instruments made and played by Eric Hoeprich (also have Anthony Pay doing the Weber/Crusell concertos), but there are many choices for these works.  Dave

I enjoyed both of these works quite a bit, but Arnold's Ninth is an emotional powerhouse for this listener.
