There were problems with last night's Carmen. Apparently it was more popular than they'd anticipated, and lots of people, including me, got messages that it was unavailable. Also complaints from paid subscribers to the Met's On Demand service that they couldn't access what they'd paid for because of all the people using it for free. I did try back an hour or so later and was able to watch it over Roku.

Most of the offerings in this first week are things I'm not really interested in seeing (or seeing again), and I've got the Onegin on DVD. I might try to catch the Trovatore (I saw it live in a movie theatre) and Lucia (I've never seen that production, though I hear I'm not missing much).

It's still not too late. It'll be available until they start Roméo et Juliette this evening. If you start in time, it should let you finish, even after R & J begins, as long as you don't exit the player.

Watched part of it. Off course the singing was good with Price et al. Old fashioned production with not too much acting typical of the Met at that time. Not one of my favourite Verdi operas. But worth hearing for Price.

Can be a bit hit and miss that but worth a try. The R & J is certainly worth a watch. Saw that at the cinema.

Just listening to Romeo and Juliet again. It really is worth catching as a production and also for the singing. Anna really is fantastic as Juliet. There is a very good review of the production here which I concur with so rather than reinvent the wheel I'll just give the link

I never know why this work is not better known. Far better than Faust imo

If you look in you can catch a stunning Bluebeard's Castle by Bartok.
Mikhail Petrenko and Nadja Michael, as Duke Bluebeard and his doomed bride, execute the machinations of Treliński's Hitchcockian psychodrama with devastating skill as the haunted-mansion sets shift seamlessly around them. Valery Gergiev conducts.

I loved that production, and saw it 3-4 times in person. (Full disclosure: It's among my top 5 operas.) The two singers are excellent, the orchestra sounds GREAT, and some of the turns by the director (Mariusz Treliński) were very effective, like the very opening, when they arrive at the castle in a car. Imaginative use of video, too, to evoke the castle's brooding hallways.

Puccini's 'Golden Girl' - not one of his best.

IMHO, despite the silly libretto ("Whisky per tutti!" and so forth  :D), musically La Fanciulla del West is probably Puccini's strongest opera. The second act is extraordinary, and the orchestration of the whole piece is miraculous. Do give it another try... :)

Always seems a tired opera to me.

Berg's Lulu tonight in case anyone wants to cheer themselves up by investigating human depravity under the influence of atonatility. I think I'll give it a miss myself!  :D
