The classical world has lost one of the great composers, and Poland is mourning one of its most passionate music educators and cultural ambassadors.

"After a long and serious illness, Krzysztof Penderecki - one of the greatest Polish musicians, a world authority in the field of classical music died," Poland's Ministry of Culture said in a tweet.

"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

On top of everything else!

A very religious person, many of his works could be used for his memorial service.  Penderecki remains one of the great composers, even in death.

He was one of the greats. Recently I listened to and enjoyed his viola concerto, which sparked an interest in repertoire featuring that instrument.

And of course, seeing the notice of his death, the first thought, "was it the virus?"  I take it the answer is no.

He's been sick for a long time, and apparently tested negative for the virus recently-ish, so almost certainly not. Still, I can't imagine the stress would have been good for him in his last days.

I have always appreciated his work. ז׳׳לֹ
