To define subject of this thread: Chamber Music for Woodwind and Strings — Woodwind Instrument(s) combined with String Instrument(s) or String Ensemble (String Trio, String Quartet, etc.).

* * *

Wind-dedicated threads on this forum (two tiny threads of single specific pieces are not listed).

Let me start from posting of my playlist of Chamber Music for Woodwind and Strings. Actually it is contents of my five playlists, combined, ordered by composer and all movements entries are combined in just piece name. Major keys are marked by single big letter at end (with flat if needed). No performer names (yes, it is sad point). 99 quartets, 35 quintets, 2 Sextets, 2 Septets, 1 Octet, 1 Nonet sums to 140 pieces and 41+ hours (41:22:29). I'd listened to them all many times. While collecting (~2 years ago) this playlist many times was considerably reconstructed: some pieces and even entire subdivisions such as Trios and Sonatas were deleted as not suitable for me (maybe wrong decision) and some pieces were added. This playlist version is stable for year or so. Yes, some significant names (e.g. Boccherini, and others) and notable pieces (e.g. Spohr's famous ones) are omitted; initially they all were in my playlists but by listening to them many times I noted that I want to skip them. So it is just playlist of my personal tastes for this time. Anyway I hope it can be useful at least as starting point for beginner listener. I hope also that pieces from this list can be found in YouTube.

I'm considering buying the Membran 20 CD box, 'Musik aus Schlösser und Residenzen' myself, where some of the rather rare items and composer names appear, apparently in good performances

So far, there's a lot of that stuff I haven't heard, but for example Kuhlau's flute quintets are very good.

Your timeline stops around 1850; I'd include later works on my own list though (such as Nielsen's Wind Quintet, more clarinet quintets generally, flute trios ..) ... but there's a lot of attractive, somewhat classically balanced and bright music there.

Yes, these quintets are beautiful. I'll try to find them on YouTube, maybe I'll find those from my playlist.

Thank you; yes, there are certain omissions in my playlist, it is just reflection of my tastes in this year or two.

Do you have any current 'favorites among the favorites' ? :)

My first playlist (of five) starts with Six Flute Quartets by Friedrich Hartmann Grafmy all time favorite — very sadly these pieces are absent on YouTube from ~2018 (I regularly check for them).

Also I'm very fond of Eichner Flute Quartets Op. 4 and Cambini G.M. Flute Oboe Quintets Opp. 8 & 9 (both are at start of playlists).

Also I'm fond of Cartellieri A.C. Clarinet Quartets.

I cannot find Kuhlau Flute Quintets Op. 51 from my playlist (by Toke Lund Christiansen, note that timing of 1st Mvt. of Op. 51/3 is 13:15).
There are two others: Ginevra Petrucci & Kodaly Quartet and Bjarne Boye Rasmussen, et al. (that Mvt. is 9:25 and 9:10).

I forgot to say that about week ago I've included the following recording in my above playlist. And it is possible that Mercadante Quartets were present in my playlist earlier but were deleted later. So, it is kind of restoration (but I not remember exactly).

Saverio Mercadante (1795—1870) Flute Quartets — Andras Adorjan & Munich String Trio

1989 Tudor.
Released on: 1989-01-01.

Karl, thank you! And there are Brass instruments in both pieces if I properly detect them. (Maybe I should state more clearly in start post that this thread is meant to be dedicated to Woodwinds and Strings — only.)

This  restriction is somewhat problematic because the most common septets through nonets from the early/mid 19th century usually have horn and sometimes piano in the mix. Because many of them follow the Beethoven septet. And "wind octets" usually always have horns as well, like Mozarts K 375 and 388.

It is just matter of categorization. In case of Piano & Wind (Woodwind or Brass) maybe more suited specifically dedicated thread, say, Chamber Music for Piano and Wind. In this case searching and finding by thread name will be more ease.

Sure, but I tend to think of "Winds" (e.g. Reicha's woodwind quintets) and "mixed" which would include any combination on winds/brass/strings (like Beethoven'S septet or Schubert's octet), even piano, e.g. Saint-Saens' Septet.

Thread name Chamber Music is ideal for any combination. But in this case it would be just impossible to find some specific combination of interest.

Of the strict wind + strings combination I am mostly interested in clarinet quartets/quintets (although there are a few of them with piano, e.g. two by Franz Schmidt).

Not too fond of the flute, I am afraid. There is a bunch of quintets op.11 by J. Chr. Bach for Oboe, Flute, Vl., Va and b.c. I prefer Mozart's oboe quartet to the flute quartets, the clarinet quintet is on another level. Also nice are the clarinet quartets arranged by someone else from Mozart violin sonatas.
Crusell's clarinet stuff is also pretty good, not sure I heard the Krommer, Stamitz, Lefevre (I have some clar. concerts by the first two.) Reicha is always good for winds, although he wrote more for wind quintet.
More clarinet quintets I have by Neukomm, of course the Weber, one by Romberg (op.57), Bärmann (op.23), Meyerbeer, two shorter Spohr pieces op.34+81, but admittedly I could not comment on them (except for the Weber) without listening again. In any case, I tend to prefer the (late) romantic and some early modern clarinet quintets: Brahms, Fuchs, Reger, Kornauth, Bliss... although I also like the late classical/early romantic stuff from the first great age of the clarinet ca. 1810-30.

Jo498, thank you! I'm not too fond of Bassoon. Even more — when I just started to listen Classical Music I could not listen the whole class of Wind instruments. It was some turn (like switch inside me was triggered) several years ago when I started to listen Woodwind instruments. And I do remember that triggering recording — it was Haydn Divertimentos for Wind Instruments (Consortium Classicum).

Thank you, it is wonderful set (...)

Well, I decided to pull the trigger regarding the Membran box "Musik aus Schlösser und Residenzen" and it should arrive in late May. Found a cheap offer on Amazon.de & had a gift card too :)
It's not Earth-shattering music, but there's a lot of pleasant, lesser known 18-19th century composers plus music, especially for winds, that was once very popular.

Amazon.es has a specified track list with MP3 samples
