Here's a fun challenge for anyone interested in old buildings in England, Scotland and Wales.

https://britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/ are collecting photos of buildings and other structures on the Statutory List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. I've added a couple of dozen since joining last month but as there are around half a million on the list there are plenty as yet unphotographed. The site includes the entries from the official listings plus excellent interactive mapping so the buildings are relatively easy to find, and is free to join.

"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

Here's what I've uploaded so far. I haven't paid that much attention to buildings before so am already out of old photos and having to go and take new ones.

That's neat!  And really nice of you to contribute to it too!

Really nice pictures & quite historically interesting, including that of the industrial and infrastructure heritage. I'd like to live in that 'Shore Mill', for instance ...
Well done, congrats from here.

EDIT: I checked the web, and it seems that the Shore Mill has a likely, estimated value of £ 770K ...

Quite interesting.
What are the criteria for being listed?

See https://britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/site/about-listed-buildings/#.XwoA0S_TWhA but it's basically an attempt by the UK government to protect buildings more than a couple of hundred years old or of some other exceptional interest. Britain in some respects is like a big open air museum.

Wow the interior shown on the Zoopla image history is really nice, a great example of what can be done while preserving the important original features.

Wow!  Cool house!  Very modern interior.  What are those black things (look like they have rollers) in the corner of the living room (mounted in the corners by ceiling)?

I plan to upload some photos from North Ronaldsay on Orkney later.

It was one of the magical, secluded places I've seen in the UK.

Excellent, I look forward to seeing them. There's about a week's delay as the site owner screens the photos before they appear.

From the listing text I'd think those are the reinforcing rods:

Timberbeam single-span floors use an interesting pre-stressing mechanism: wrought-iron tie-rods are employed (of late C19) to sustain increase loading on the beams.

Thank you for the information. They probably have to monitor for quality etc. ...

Sounds like that it's probably them; very strange looking however.  I took another look and you can see them in various photos of the property.

I can't see any new photos of North Ronaldsay. My photos from our walk on Sunday are up already :).

Being at home again, I finally uploaded a bit from North Ronaldsay on Orkney islands, the Holland House/Hollandstoun buildings and the lighthouse there. Not particularly spectacular photos though. It takes some time to get into the procedures of the system and not at least find the exact buildings, and I had expected more of the various, older ruins of chapels, castles and brochs etc. to be also included in the registration of listed buildings. As regards the Hebrides for example, they often seem to prefer local Gaelic names too, not so easy to navigate in. And you have to establish a profile on Disqus too. But I'll probably upload a bit more later.

Ideally however, you'd have the website in mind when actually visiting the places, to be sure to have the relevant and best photos of those mentioned buildings. Websites like Google Street view are somewhat competitive, but so far won't include as many details and places away from roads.

steve ridgway

Oh cool, let us know when they appear :).
