Pohjolas Daughter

Hello all.

I'm trying to find some information on a broadcast that I heard years ago (possibly going back maybe 15 years?).  I recall hearing a wonderful broadcast of "The Picture of Dorian Gray" which I believe was from Dallas (which would make sense but I checked his--Lowell Liebermann's website) and I don't see a performance listed there.  This was what was listed so far:

PRODUCTIONS

1996 - L'Opera de Monte-Carlo (World Premiere)
1999 - Florentine Opera (US Premiere)
2007 - Center City Opera Theater (World Premiere of Reduced Orchestra Version)
2014 - Aspen Opera Center
2016 - Fayetteville Opera
2016 - Odyssey Opera

It was one of the Saturday from the Met broadcasts but not from the Met (not part of the regular season there) which I would have heard on NPR.  Any thoughts as to how I could check on it?  Perhaps it was the 1999 one (saw a link with that listed).

Best wishes,

Was it the complete opera? Or the symphonic suite Liebermann extracted from the opera (opus 70/ for the Dallas SO)?

It was the opera...not the suite.

Pretty sure it was 9/4/1999, performance from Florentine Opera, Milwaukee.
Wiki page has a dead link.
Independent Googling gives links
https://seamus.npr.org/programs/attheopera/archives/990904.ato.html
and
https://seamus.npr.org/programs/worldofopera/archives/990904.woo.html

but the trail ends there. The "Where can I hear it?" link at the latter page is the same dead one referenced on Wiki.

According to https://www.lowellliebermann.com/1999
the performance would have dated from February 5, 6, or 7, 1999 (conceivably some combination of the 3 in the event of edits/splices).

Good luck finding a recording of the broadcast.  ;)

Sunday Afternoon at the Opera host Keith Brown writes:

The opera for Halloweentide this year is a close adaptation for the lyric stage of the 1891 novel by Oscar Wilde. Dorian Gray is the first of two operas by American composer and conductor Lowell Liebermann (b. 1961), the other one being Miss Lonelyhearts (2006). Also in the Halloween frame of mind is his music for a ballet Frankenstein (2015), co-produced by the Royal Ballet and the San Francisco Ballet.

Lowell Liebermann's The Picture of Dorian Gray premiered at Monte Carlo Opera in 1996. The American premiere came in 1999 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where it was produced by Florentine Opera. Steuart Bedford, who directed the Monte Carlo premiere, now leads the singers of the Florentine Opera Company and the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. That Milwaukee production was recorded and is currently available to the public online courtesy of the House of Opera. Thanks to Rob Meehan, former classics DJ here at WWUH and a specialist record collector in the alternative musical stylings of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, for loaning to me for broadcast his download from the House of Opera website onto two compact discs.

Maybe you can try to contact Rob Meehan!?

Good luck.
Could it be this? Cd or download.

I looked at The House of Opera website, and there are multiple listings for the performance.  I understand that at least one of them is for on CD and another would be for an MP3 version, but other than that, it doesn't make sense to me.  Plus, as far as I can see, the links to sample the sound aren't there. Has anyone used this company/site before?

Anyway, I've sent an email to them.  Will let you know what I find out then.

Thanks again!
