Psychedelic Music

Any good recordings of classical/non-classical psychedelic (whatever the term means) music? Only works I can think of would be Symphonie Fantasique, Scriabin,  and a few Khachaturian works (Middle-eastern scale).  Opinions on the terminology are welcome too.

Mort Garson’s The Zodiac - Cosmic Sounds is my favourite, hilariously over the top and kitsch. As an Amazon UK reviewer said, “I first came across it in the late 60's when a small record shop (now gone) in the West End of London used to play it continually through a loudspeaker over the door, so much so that the police were always being called to move the crowd of hippies on the pavement outside”. 8)

Yes, I think pretty much all music can have a psychedelic dimension, if one chooses to, but of course some works and composers have been identified as particularly amorphous, visionary or esoteric music. A couple of suggestions - take it or leave it

- Subotnick - Silver Apples of the Moon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3G1hRNLlYpg https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silver_Apples_of_the_Moon_(Morton_Subotnick_album)

- Nørgård - Percussion Concerto, For a Change https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2qTcJfv_as

- Obukhov generally https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6K3S46h1hE , https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xeTd8cO3wX8

- Saariaho - Flute Concerto https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GP0jgLvpXE0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4GwSR2eB_4

Interesting selections, Mandryka!
I like all the songs. The 3rd song is beautiful, and it is psychedelic. The 2nd song is a chant, I think. Interestingly, it sounds similar to Buddhist chants. It is spiritual and transcendental.
The 1st song is a good music, but a question remains about your definition of psychedelic music. Why/how do you find the song psychedelic?

P.s. do you think Bach’s Chromatic Fantasia is psychedelic as I assumed?

Because they’re trippy. Have you ever taken acid? I can assure you that this music would be perfect.

I haven’t done that. I will try with your selection of music in a few years. Thanks a lot.

Ligeti's 'Atmospheres' because of its association with 2001: A Space Odyssey.
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

I like it a lot! Great compositions and performance. Somehow the album reminds me of the Pink Floyd 1st and 2nd.

I checked it on YT. Great music and, as the title suggests, very atmospheric. I imagine this is a challenging piece for orchestras and conductors.

Yes, all music are psychedelic to some degree. Thank you for your suggestions. I like all of them except Subotnick. The Obukhov pieces are rather aesthetic and picturesque, and the Norgard Concerto is mysterious and sublime. While the Saariaho is a good composition and mysterious, it is a little too scary. All the works are significant compositions. Thanks a lot.

What about Adés' Asyla, especially the third movement "Ecstasio"?

Glad to hear that. They are among my favourites, of course. Btw, the CD of the quirky Subotnick work has a better sound than the you-tube transfer, which isn't very good.

Surreal. The music reminds me of Gagaku, Japanese ancient court music.

Popov's kaleidoscopic Symphony No.1 comes to mind:
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

I checked the Botstein/LSO recording, and this is kind of music/composition I like. I checked the Symphony No.2 and I liked it as well.
So I am listening to his other Symphonies and they sound very good.
It seems that he had a trouble with the Soviet government.
