Quote from: Mandryka on August 02, 2023, 11:41:32 PMCan someone tell me how I can search a topic? Putting a string in the box and selecting This Topic and then Search doesn't seem to work.

It seems to be broken.  I tried different searches in which I knew the post that should turn up.  Some times it did and some times it did not.  I think the issue is with the forum index, which Rob will have to look into.  We can tell him about it.

It works for me. Single words are fine. Phrases work as long as they are made of common words. Non-dictionary words such as "Op.87" won't work. Can you give me an example of searches that don't work for you?

I used to search for previous post by myself (or specific other members) by filling in a name after "by user". Doesn't work anymore - just a blank result.

Ditto for the "Show results as messages" or "Search in topic subjects only" options.

What works is a general search. To the extent it "worked" before: pretty random "selected" results. For instance a reply to a post shows up, but not the original post. But that is nothing new, the other features were a way to work around that and force the search to be more focused.

I had some mixed results when I tried searching by a specific poster.  I suspect that if you don't type in enough letters that that can be a problem.  When I just typed in three letters it didn't bring up any results; however, when I typed in longer words results appeared.

For example, when I typed Vaughan Williams and vandermolen:  bingo!  When I typed in cat vet nothing came up even though he had posted on May 23, 2023 "This morning I was ordered to take our cat to the vet to get his nails clipped...."

Well, that's a bummer... my forum name only has three letters!  ;D

Fear not!  I typed in piano and Que as the poster and lots came up!  :)

From this thread, searching "searches" in this topic (using the search box in the upper right, with default settings) gives no results.

Karl used the word "tickled" on the previous page, and the search won't turn it up.  Single words are sadly not fine.

Search for Bach on the listening thread and nothing shows up. Nothing shows up for Chopin in the Chopin thread . . .

OK, I think this must a per-user  bug.

When I search for Bach on the "What are you listening 2" thread, I get 191 pages worth of results. I get 14 pages of results when searching for Chopin on the Chopin topic.

I posted this issue to the SMF support forum about a year ago and did not get any cogent leads. I hoped that by updating to 2.1.4 the issue would be resolved. It looks like it has not.

I have posted the issue to the support forum again.

Thank you!  I just tried the Bach and the Chopin searches under topic, and a no-go from me (as in no results).

Perhaps it's a permissions issue?

I can not complete the Chopin search, either in Firefox or Chrome, so it doesn't seem like a browser issue. (I don't use any extensions in Chrome.)

I tried it in both Safari and Firefox here.

How does one retrieve a draft?  I had started one and saved it, but I have no idea how to access it.  :(

PD

EDIT:  I found out how.  After you've signed in (of course) you click on your user name (top left) and there's an icon for "my drafts".

Worth pointing out that drafts self-delete 7 days after your last edit took place, so don't write War & Peace in there!  :)

Good point.  I did see that warning when I hit the save-as-a-draft button.  :)

is adding AISN's now a thing of the Dim and Distant Past?
... but English music has a flavour all of its own, and once the taste is acquired it is never lost. It is an indefinable quality that is present in musicians who seem to have little else in common: Elgar and Warlock, Delius and Britten, Bliss, Bax and Ireland.-Colin Wilson, 1967

I think it is long gone.  The shortcut button is not even there anymore.

Doesn't seem to do anything.

The new software was a fresh install and did not include my own coding hacks.
I will try to resurrect the ASIN function for the new software.

Another plea from me to somehow enable search in a thread. Why is it so difficult to do?
