- German composer, conductor, violinist and organist, active in France.
- born in Mannheim
- student of Stamitz
- resided in Bordeaux after 1760
- professor at Instituit de France after 1794, until his death
- a contemporary of Haydn, but his symphonies were the first to feature four movements, and "are rich with the violent contrasts and explosive effects associated with the Stürm und Drang phase found in Haydn's middle symphonies and those of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach"
- his Stabat Mater is considered the crown of his late works
- he was forgotten in the Romantic era, but his work was revived in the 1920's by Riemann and Sondheimer
