It's so upsetting seeing one of your musical heroes sick and this photo shows someone who looks like he's barely holding on. It also shows someone who has accepted their fate as all us will have to do one day.

His expression conveys impatience more than anything else, imho ( though he was certainly ill by the time this was taken ).

Sure, well, impatience would certainly be a part of this boat ride back to Europe. I think he just wanted to get home, but I'm sure he knew he didn't have much time left. Mahler just had that kind of intuition.

Yes! I imagine that was the look on his face when he gave his famous criticism of American audiences as not paying attention to the music but letting their mind wander.
