Inspired by Dr.Tulp....( see Rembrandt)

The "beauty" of cool horror...The martyrdom of Saint Erasmus by Dirk Bouts

Dieric Bouts, also spelled Dirk, Dierick and Dirck (born circa 1410/1420, died 1475) was an Early Netherlandish ( Belgo-Dutch) painter.

According to Karel van Mander in his Het Schilderboeck of 1604, Bouts was born in Haarlem and was mainly active in Leuven (Louvain), where he was city painter from 1468. Van Mander confused the issue by writing biographies of both "Dieric of Haarlem" and "Dieric of Leuven," although he was referring to the same artist. The similarity of their last names also led to the confusion of Bouts with Hubrecht Stuerbout, a prominent sculptor in Leuven. Very little is actually known about Bouts' early life, but he was greatly influenced by Jan van Eyck and by Rogier van der Weyden, under whom he may have studied. He is first documented in Leuven in 1457 and worked there until his death in 1475.( From Wikipedia)

Bouts was among the first northern painters to demonstrate the use of a single vanishing point (as illustrated in his Last Supper). His work has a certain primitive stiffness of drawing, but his pictures are highly expressive, well designed and rich in colour.

Susan & I are on a short trip to Charlotte to see a Saturday matinée of The Jersey Boys; but on the way down (just a 90 min drive from Winston Salem), we stopped at the Carolina Raptor Center - a place that contains raptor birds of all types, most injured, being rehabilitated, and not able to be re-released for a wide variety of reasons.

Some of the birds include owls of various types, falcons, vultures, eagles (bald & golden) and others, but I really love looking at the faces of the owls and watch them turn their heads; just a couple below - i.e. a horned and barn owl :D

Yes, the only up-side there is that the guy now has a home....of sorts....for an extended period. But it sucks.

Well, our legal system (humorously referred to as a "system of justice") is descended from the English system, which was developed by the ruling (i.e. "moneyed") class as a less taxing means to protect their interests and keep the peasants in line than sallying forth to lop off a few heads now and again.

Recently on our trip to New Orleans, we visited a favorite art gallery of ours on Royal Street - Elliott Gallery (used to be the Nahan Gallery but still family owned) - this gallery just has artists that Harpo & I enjoy (plus we receive a small discount because of being frequent customers although does not take that many purchases).

This gallery offers limited edition prints, i.e. NOT posters - these are works of art made by different methods using traditional printmaking techniques (examples being etching, lithographs, silk screening, etc.) - not cheap, but less expensive than an original single painting, water color, or other 'single' media work created by an artist!

Well, we bought a lithograph by a French artist Max Papart (1911-94) - being framed at the moment in our home town - can't find a pic to show, but kind of a Picasso cubist style; now another Israeli artist, Nissan Engel was of interest to us (we've purchased two of his prints previously) - wanted to buy two but hesitated, so
on our return we decided to purchase the print below - again, limited edition etching w/ aquatint - very impressionistic, plus this artist encompasses 'music motifs' in his prints which often include music sheets w/ pieces of classic composers - we're about to order this print over the phone - will have it framed locally @ a reliable shop!
;D

Now, this is our third Engel print but one was offered and 'taken' by our son!  So we wanted a replacement -  ;) :D

Well, a first for me - Harpo & I are on a long weekend vacation to Asheville, NC and staying yet again at the Inn of Biltmore Estate - we reserved a Segway tour which included a half hour training session, then about 90 mins on both paved and unpaved trails, the latter going up a mountain w/ a close look at the back of Biltmore House.  Well, Harpo was not comfortable w/ the training session so decided not to go - thus, I was alone w/ a guide - HAD a great time - felt like a teenager an amusement park!  Below, a pic of me on the Segway taken by the guide - lagoon immediately behind and the back of Biltmore House in the background!  :)

We had hoped that Segway would be a husband/wife "bonding" activity, but it wasn't to be. 60 seconds into my orientation, I started to go in circles when I wanted to go forward. Fearing I would totally lose control of the contraption, I  gave up and went for a cappuccino. When Sonic told me (i.e.  bragged)   ;) that he had effortlessly glided up and down steep hills and over gravel and rocks, I knew I had made the right decision. This is not an activity for a chubby senior citizen lady with poor coordination. (It was, however, a fine activity for a certain doctor/music lover who was an excellent trampoline jumper in college.)
If music be the food of love, hold the mayo.

Can someone tell me if there's an easy way of posting pictures I have in Word files? Or do I laboriously have to get them onto a photo file, then to a photo host site, then link them to the forum?

greg

Well, if they're small enough, you don't have to host them on a site- just attach them to a message.

How do I do that?

Hello Sean - at the bottom of your 'post reply' box is an option 'Additional Options' - just click on the + sign to see what is available - when done, an Attach: box will appear in which you can browse your 'hard drive' and attach a number of different types of files; total maximum (either 1 or multiple files) is 500 KB - not that big, but for photos you can easily JPEG/resize them down to the size permitted.  A couple of posts before, I 'attached' my Segway photo which was 'gigantic' on the camera, I simply cropped and downsized the photo for easy attachment - Dave  :)
