USMC1960s

This is one of my favorite Mozart pieces. I would appreciate any CD recommendations as to what you think is the "best" (always subjective, I realize) recording. Thanks in advance. Have been off here for years! Just retired for the second time from practicing law, criminal law (what fun) in the inner-city Boston courts and now in Missouri (a lot quieter). Anyway, thanks for any assistance.

That's the only one I have and I'm very happy with. An outstanding piece, for sure.

Thank you.

You're welcome.

Sorry for the confusion. It must have been the avatar.  I do apologize.

Deutsche Gramophon reissued the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra recording twice in 3cd box sets, added with (almost) every Mozart wind concerto.
I think it's a good choice, for all those concertos.

The former reissue is now available for a nice price, at Presto Classical, albeit with a 'warning': This item is currently out of stock at the UK distributor. You may order it now but please be aware that it may be six weeks or more before it can be despatched.

I personally like the Ton Koopman/Hazelzet/Kwast recording very much. Slender and fresh.

Thanks very much.

I forgot to mention this particular one, but if you want to combine K. 299 with something 'different', then this might be of interest:

Mozart, coupled with Carl Reinecke and Joaquín Rodrigo.
A 1962 recording, but of the older recordings I rate this one very high, even though the performers aren't household names to many of us, with the exception maybe of harpist Nicanor Zabaleta. It's real fun to hear him play those Reinecke and Rodrigo harp concertos.

Very nice recommendation...thank you

Both of my own favorites have already been mentioned here. The Immerseel, and the Koopman. The Koopman is super for all 3 concertos on it. The Immerseel has the nicest sounding harp, it stands out nicely.

+1

This also has K297b reconstructed to the original instrumentation for the wind soloists.

Yes, forgot that one, it's a peach too. And for more than just the harp concerto, the whole album is highly interesting. :)

I don't care for the piece (it's one of the almost major works by Mozart I'd never listen to unless it's a discmate - unless the discmate is the flute concerto than they are equally unlikely to be listened to... I share Mozart's relative dislike of both instruments as solo instruments) and have at least two recordings, Immerseel and Harnoncourt I got for the couplings and in a box respectively.
But the Freiburger disc could entice me for the "original"/reconstructed version of the woodwind concertante...

It's not a piece to 'dig in deep'. I agree with you on that. But it works really well for me on a calm autumnal Sunday. ;)
The horn and clarinet concertos show however that Mozart was probably more attracted to those wind instruments. Or, even more likely perhaps, he was more impressed by the skills of the musicians who had to play them.

Jo498

I can only guess about Mozart's preferences but he wrote great woodwind music, usually without flute, like in the 3 big serenades, the quintets etc. but *I* am far more attracted to clarinet, horn and oboe than to the flute or harp... I wouldn't claim that the oboe concerto or the 1st violin concerto are better than flute/harp but they are still a more attractive proposal to me for some lighter Mozart.
