I've been listening to Dan Carlin's Hard Core History - the series on the war in the pacific, "Supernova in the East." I find it riveting. It's not the first series of his I've gone for and he's generally very thorough and entertaining. It's good. I recommend it.

There's a zen buddhist one I listen to, but I don't care for most others. I cohosted a podcast a ways back and didn't even care to do that for long!

Melvyn Bragg's In Our Time was the first podcast I ever listened to. It's still going strong and I've still got the highest regard for it:

A number of the Guardian"s "Long Read" essays get turned into audio as podcasts, and I try to hear as many of those as I can:

https://www.theguardian.com/news/series/the-audio-long-read

Until recently I was enjoying a great many interviews with academic authors on The New Books Network, but they've had some kind of meltdown and are currently in limbo.

For dealing with the Trump era there are these, all of which are in the format of interviews with experts on whatever issue is under discussion - I have no interest in a political podcast that is just one or two people sounding off with nothing more than their own spin, no matter how smart they are:

I never heard of Dan Carlin but a few days ago I listened to a 3 hour podcast on Lex Fridman's channel with him, anyways:

So yeah, besides Lex Fridman the podcasts I listen to (that are purely podcasts rather than "podcast-like") are Joe Rogan and Trash Taste (which is about anime/otaku stuff).

Great to listen to long podcasts when either gaming or working.

I used to listen to In Our Time. I don't know why I stopped. It's good. I've listened to the Beatles one and I'd like to hear the Dylan ones.

One of my favorite podcasts just for fun is Tim Heidecker's "Office Hours." But It's a quirky take on comedy. I do recommend it for those with odd comedy taste.

Just learned Jeremy PacMan has started an interview podcast called The Lock In.

Also recently started is a series devoted to the career and scandals of Berlesconi called Bunga Bunga.

^That 8-part one on Berlusconi was excellent, btw. Pity it wasn't available as required listening in 2016.

Three more ongoing ones I've just stumbled on, sampled,  and now added to the mix:

Cold War Conversations

The History of the Cold War Podcast

East Germany Podcast - Radio GDR

Does anyone here know of any good, intelligent non-introductory podcasts on classical music?

SimonNZ

Surely others here have podcasts they listen to and could recommend...?

Anyway, I've just stumbled on an interesting one not yet finished which is author Iain Dale following up the publication of his book on the Prime Ministers of Britain with interviews with each of the 55 authors who wrote essays in it on each of the 55 PMs, getting them to expand on their thoughts about each of their subjects. The episodes do not follow the chronological order.

Gilbert Gottfried's podcast is great fun if you can get over his laugh. He (and his cohost) interview many forgotten actors, writers and directors from previous eras of entertainment/Hollywood. There are too many personalities to mention really but they take nostalgia very seriously and have a lot of regard for character actors and the details of comedy, television and movies from each decade the media existed. If you like to dwell on the 70's, 60's, 50s (and beyond) and the stars, shows and films of those times, you'll enjoy this podcast.

Don't listen very often to podcasts though I have listened to a few by the Sports Illustrated and tennis commentator Jon Wertheim.  He used to do one called "Beyond the Baseline".  I don't know whether or not he'll be doing more of them in the future.  I suspect that he might be doing a hiatus from it due to the pandemic, but don't know.  Perhaps the funding dried up?  You can listen to old ones here:  https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/beyond-the-baseline-sis-tennis-podcast-with-jon-wertheim/id1005210315

just in case we start a squabble on a different thread, I'd like to say thanks very much for this recommendation. I've been binge-listening it over the last couple of months, almost to the point of completion.

The Guardian:

'I almost wet myself laughing': 50 funny podcasts to make you feel much better

from that list I was particularly intrigued by this:

Dear Joan and Jericha
Rude, childish and oozing with body fluids, this horror agony aunt podcast is the funniest, filthiest thing you can subject your ears to. Its hosts, Joan Damry (Julia Davis) and Jericha Domain (Vicki Pepperdine), dispense terrible advice to listeners on their definitely-not-made-up problems, usually ending in lengthy digressions on the majesty of the male phallus. Less blush-inducing to listen to at home than on your morning commute – and, unless you live alone, use headphones.

And oh my they are not kidding. Hilarious, though, if can take it, and I love how thy play it straight.

I've also been bingeing You're Wrong About which is much more reliably informative, and is also on that list.

I am a subscriber of "For the Many" featuring Ian Dale and ex-Labour Home Secretary, Jackie Smith. An irreverent and at times raunchy look at world politics.
You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

I opened the door people rushed through and I was left holding the knob - Bo Diddley.

Jaw dropping! Not least the "Little Black Book" episode revealing the names of the great and not so good.

I haven't listened to these podcasts, but have been keeping an eye on both the Epstein story and her arrest and trial.  I trust that you have heard what charges she has been convicted of Irons?

Speaking of which, I wonder whether or not Prince Andrew will ever be tried here in the US?  His lawyers are trying to get his case dismissed:  https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-59865102

I find it ironic PD that rich and entitled males abuse underage females and yet it is a female who will be locked up.

Prince Andrew, much as I detest the man, should not stand trial in a US criminal court. I feel the pain of the parents of Harry Dunn and justice has been denied by the US authorities who refused extradition of Anne Sacoolas.
