Glad to see Violin sonata and -concerto gathering votes. Splendid works.  8)
"Javert, though frightful, had nothing ignoble about him. Probity, sincerity, candor, conviction, the sense of duty, are things which may become hideous when wrongly directed; but which, even when hideous, remain grand."

The Dream of Gerontius (The oratorio...)
Cello concerto (The cello concerto...)
Violin concerto
Symphony no 1
Enigma Variations or Alassio (In the South)

P&C March no 1 is one of the world's potboilers. I never tire of it, esp the transition from the trio back to the Big Tune.

What are your Top 5 Favorite Elgar works? There are no stipulations for this poll. Have a blast!

My list (in no particular order):

Symphony No. 2 in E-flat, Op. 63
The Spirit of England, Op. 80
Sospiri, Op. 70
Enigma Variations, Op. 36
Violin Concerto in B minor, Op. 61

If I could go back and make this list again, I'd probably substitute Sospiri for the Violin Sonata in E minor, Op. 82 as, since making this previous list, this has become one of my favorite Elgar works.

Sospiri is a beautiful piece indeed, John. I almost included it instead of the Enigma Variations, but it's just too short :(

But Sospiri's duration is what I find extremely attractive about the work --- it never overstays its' welcome.

You resurrect these threads and I am tempted to participate too  :D

It seems that you read my mind, those could be my choices. To be a little bit different, I'd replace In the South with the Cello concerto.
