In the past I didn't understand at all people have different tastes. Over the years while debating online and reading other people's opinions about things I started to understand we are different and that's okay. There are even theories explaning people's different tastes.
Do you mean this?

The biggest difference I think between me and the average person's taste in music is the average person is much lower in Openness and much higher in Extroversion, so if you read the descriptions of tastes it makes sense.

There is also this from that link I just found:
QuoteWhile listening to classical music excerpts, those rated high in openness tended to decrease in liking music faster during repeated listenings, as opposed to those scoring low in openness, who tended to like music more with repeated plays. This suggests novelty in music is an important quality for people high in openness to experience

Yeah. Relatable.

Absolutely. Part of my socalled identity is liking and loving things no one else loves.

Maybe it's inimical to GMG, but finding people who love the same things as I do, doesn't really make a difference.

Back when I was a professional (book) critic I could write the occasional review that turned on a lot of readers, and publishers really liked that, which is when I stopped doing that.

Yes, it seems that each person has their musical narrative to tell and we tell it by the music that moves us intellectually/emotionally. It's such a personal tale each of us has with this music in that it doesn't involve anyone else. This isn't to say that it's not great to meet other like-minded listeners and discuss music as we do here on GMG, but, ultimately, no one will change your outlook or viewpoint as all of our journeys are deeply personal ones.

You think too much and over-rationalize even more. Just listen to whatever gives you pleasure and stop thinking about the whys and the hows or about what other people might think about your current preferences. Yiou like what you like, period and it's nobody else's business.

If I may make a joke, what define your identity is these recurrent identity crises.  :D

Exactly! :)

I didn't even remember I had made this thread. Now a few years later I feel so different. I feel like I have found myself again. There is no identity crisis anymore.
