Quote from: Luke on December 25, 2024, 08:35:18 AMYou're my friends and I love you all. Please, please say a prayer or send a wish or whatever feels right for you, tonight, please, for my poor beautiful wife Philippa who died this Christmas Day just before 1.00 this afternoon. I don't know what to do now or how to cope without her but the thought of your kindness helping her on her journey from afar comforts me tonight when I can't do anything else for her. Thank you

I'm so very sorry, Luke. I'm without words.

My nephew just sent me a picture of his daughter born today. Philippa is a beautiful name. I'll humbly suggest it. Peace, Luke, we are all with you tonight.

Luke, just adding my sadness and condolences to those of others here. Not much to be done from afar, but I hope a "virtual hug" is some small help. It is clear that you have a lot of people in your corner.

From the Low Countries: my sincerest condolences.

I was thinking of Strauss's Four last songs...

Nun der Tag mich müd gemacht,
Soll mein sehnliches Verlangen
Freundlich die gestirnte Nacht
Wie ein müdes Kind empfangen.

Hände, laßt von allem Tun
Stirn, vergiß du alles Denken,
Alle meine Sinne nun
Wollen sich in Schlummer senken.

Und die Seele unbewacht
Will in freien Flügen schweben,
Um im Zauberkreis der Nacht
Tief und tausendfach zu leben.

Just felt like this piece was fitting (I apologize if it is not): Beethoven's String Quintet in D Minor

Sincerest condolences -- tried to sing a few words of comfort & peace last week for our Ukrainian friends, perhaps also fitting now:
... music is not only an 'entertainment', nor a mere luxury, but a necessity of the spiritual if not of the physical life, an opening of those magic casements through which we can catch a glimpse of that country where ultimate reality will be found.    RVW, 1948

Luke - I cannot imagine your pain and loss.  In such times I find this poem both beautiful and offering some solace.  The fact that Delius set it with immense sensitivity for me adds to its power...

A Late Lark Twitters From The Quiet Skies
And from the west,
Where the sun, his day's work ended,
Lingers as in content,
There falls on the old, gray city
An influence luminous and serene,
A shining peace.

The smoke ascends
In a rosy-and-golden haze.
The spires
Shine and are changed.
In the valley
Shadows rise.
The lark sings on.
The sun,
Closing his benediction,
Sinks, and the darkening air
Thrills with a sense of the triumphing night—
Night with her train of stars
And her great gift of sleep.

So be my passing!
My task accomplish'd and the long day done,
My wages taken, and in my heart
Some late lark singing,
Let me be gather'd to the quiet west,
The sundown splendid and serene,
Death.

Just seen this terribly sad news. I couldn't express my thoughts any better than this. All strength to you Luke.

Oh my gosh, this is awful news, Luke! I'm so sorry to hear it! My deepest condolences and warmest wishes to you. I can't imagine what you are going through, but am thinking of you, and hope you can find some strength and consolation along the way to help you through such a terrible loss.

I'm sorry for your loss Luke.

Just adding a small voice to the very large chorus here, sending every bit of love, support, and good feelings to Luke and both his and her families right now.
