Giovanni Paolo Foscarini (fl. 1629 – 1647) was an Italian guitarist, lutenist, theorist and composer. Pavaniglia con parti variate (Pavaniglia with various parts) comes from his "Li 5 libri della chitarra alla spagnola" (The five books of the Spanish guitar) which is published in 1640. His publications were highly regarded in his lifetime and included numerous collections of music, frequently reprinting earlier material.

As a sixteenth-century dance, the pavaniglia is a subtype of the pavan and the galliard.

The guitar arrangement of the piece is arranged by Canadian classical guitarist Jeffrey McFadden and selected as one of RCM (The Royal Conservatory of Music) level 6 repertoire.
