Topic: Excerpt from my WIP Symphony No. 4

I’m currently working on my Symphony No. 4.  It is in three movements and scored for a Mahler sized orchestra lasting 50 minutes.  It reaches a cataclysmic fury which subsides in to a long, slow building apotheosis complete with organ.  Still very much a work in progress but I’m happy with how it is turning out.  I’m about half finished.  This is an excerpt from the start of the last movement which is terse and violent.

Excellent! I really want to hear more - and I'd love to see the score too, but that's up to you. I actually just listened to the excerpt from your Symphony no. 1 yesterday - and it's apparent your harmonic language has expanded significantly! Very atmospheric... chilling and ominous! I really like some of the little details: the way the muted trombones (I think) emerge from the pounding timpani at 0:19, the flourish of the celesta at 0:31, and the piccolo at 0:42 reminds me of a passage in the finale of Mahler 6. The way the violins lacerate through the texture at 1:03, the pounding rhythm that starts at 1:09, the fast figuration in (piano or organ?) starting at 1:22, and the diminuendo that begins at 1:51 only to be interrupted by the ostinato starting at 2:01. And your orchestration is magnificent! Keep up the great work, I look forward to your continued progress.

EDIT:  After reading another poster's comments about listening to your Arctic Dawn, I went back and listened to it...really enjoyed it!  Seriously!  Have you had any of your work recorded or performed before Relm1?

Thank you for posting some of the score. The orchestra is definitely Mahler-sized... and I don't think Mahler ever used two tubas! And your orchestration is stunning! If you share the completed symphony, I look forward to hearing it!

I'm liking it so far! I like the chromatic harmonies in the strings - it's almost a threnody, but more sinister voices take over (timpani, muted trombones, bass clarinet). Very effective. And I like the way what (I think) is the second excerpt builds to a sustained climax. I look forward to hearing more of this second movement!

I'm nearly done.  Here is an excerpt from the climax of the 1st movement.   

There are two major opposing forces, a solemn string choral and a forceful brass fanfare.  They mostly stay out of each other’s way until this moment where the conflicting ideas break down, becoming more forceful and aggressive building towards the climax then gradually fades away.
