Just ordered it :-)

The Sammons/Violin Concerto is the standout performance here.  Boult's symphony is good of course but the Lyrita recording is technically so much better and not readically different.  The Coetmore is again of real value as a historical document but as a performance she is not a great player.

And yet I find her performance of the Cello Concerto on Lyrita so much more deeply felt and moving despite the technical limitations of her playing.

then I think you will enjoy this performance a lot as she is clearly in better technical form here.

Personally, I didn't engage that much with this concerto until I heard Guy Johnston's Naxos performance which for me is the best combination of the lyrical and the athletic (which is why I like the Sammons Violin Concerto here too - probably the best all round version I have heard).

Well, I shall look forward to receiving the CD even though the Cello Concerto only seems to be available as a download.

I agree wholeheartedly with both posts as I think the Johnston* and Coetmore recordings compliment rather then in competition. Guy Johnston ably supported by Ulster Orchestra conducted by JoAnn Falletta produce a far more rounded and professional performance. For a listener appreciative of Moeran's music but not so interested in the life and circumstances of the composer it is a no contest, Johnston is the version to have. However, with such a poignant backstory, hearing Peers Coetmore perform the Adagio which without fail brings a tear to my eye, Johnston doesn't do that, how could he. I would not be without either recording.

You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

Thanks v much Lol. I do, of course, have the Naxos CD and I'm now encouraged to hear it again.
