That purity of tone in his early days and the effortless power when he wanted to wind up the volume. No sense of strain or stress whatsoever, he just opens his mouth and the sound just pours out. I first came across the young Pavarotti in the Henri Clouzot film of a performance of the Verdi Requiem from the mid 60s. My understanding is that he deputised for an ailing Giuseppe di Stefano. HvK conducted La Scala Milan and the other soloists were Price, Cossotto and Ghiaurov. Pavarotti more than held his own in such elite company. The performance is available on a DGG DVD and can also be seen on YouTube. For me, this is the greatest modern performance (I'm talking the stereo era) of this work.

I was also deeply impressed by his voice.

My mother was a coloratura.

I remember, as a child, when she practiced, the walls would literally vibrate.

And we didn't have much crystal, but what we had, we did have to put away.


The human voice is amazing..
