Recommend a song that you love, whether it's a stand-alone or part of a greater work.

Say what it is that you find so haunting. And if possible, refer to a performance or post a link to YouTube.
Music is Magic.

I love this eighteenth-century French song, French Baroque Song: Le Roi a fait battre Tambour (1750 c.).

I particularly like this performance by Poeme Harmonique - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfJZu_Bz6Yo - although Edith Piaf and others have sung it.

Why I like the song is the 'inevitable' quality to the tune which builds up the tragedy of the loyal wife who has to fulfil her marital and patriotic duty by becoming the king's mistress.

In this performance, I like the blend of instruments and voices. I suppose also, as a woman, the situation fills me with horror and anger.
Music is Magic.
