I love this eighteenth-century French song, French Baroque Song: Le Roi a fait battre Tambour (1750 c.).
I particularly like this performance by Poeme Harmonique -

Why I like the song is the 'inevitable' quality to the tune which builds up the tragedy of the loyal wife who has to fulfil her marital and patriotic duty by becoming the king's mistress.
In this performance, I like the blend of instruments and voices. I suppose also, as a woman, the situation fills me with horror and anger.
