Quote from: Mandryka on November 26, 2022, 10:08:15 AMIt would be nice if, when we mentioned someone, their name appeared as a link to their profile in the post.

Also, to discourage discord and encourage a little healthy competition, the number of likes a person has received could be recorded in their profile and in the list of members. You could add a little halo icon to their avatar if they are in the top 3.

That strikes me as a terrible idea. The number of likes will be largely determined by the rate of posting. Maybe the ratio of likes to posts would have some meaning.

The way I've seen this done elsewhere (such as Ars Technica) is that you can upvote and downvote posts. If you allowed that, then you'd be able to have a league table of people based on their up/down vote ratio, which would be independent of the absolute number of posts entirely.

I tend to agree with Andrei up-thread, however, that this sort of 'competitive voting' doesn't seem to be something that really suits the mood and feel of the place.

Thanks, but the credit should go to Bela Bartok, from whom I stole the quote.

I tend to be in favor or likes, without any competitive feature such as tabulating who has the most likes. When I see that a post of mine has been "liked" I have some indication that someone noticed and appreciated my contribution.

Quote from: Spotted Horses on November 26, 2022, 06:05:35 AMIt seems that the like button has disappeared from all of my posts, so my posts cannot be "liked"

The Like button does not show for your own posts. But it will be visible to others on your posts. The theory is, I guess, that if you made the post, you automatically considered it worthy, and valiant, and you can't also "like" it.

Have a read of the whole thread (or at least around page 11)
It's not a question of the like button not being visible for *some* posts, let alone your *own* posts.
Screenshots have been provided showing that it's not available on *any* posts at all.

There was a suggestion that subscribers might be lacking it as a group. I obviously have no idea if that suggestion has merit. But there are a reasonable number of people who cannot see a like option for all posts, by anyone.

Edited to add: And just like that, within the last minute or so, the like button has suddenly appeared for me. Whatever you did to fix it, thanks.

Good grief. So to sum up the last several pages, a subscription frees you from the tyranny of the like button, we've just about managed to get away from people agreeing with a proposition about anonymity that wasn't ever applicable, and most of us can't understand why the hell one member wants a league table that I've never seen implemented on any site anywhere.

Have I got that about right? What a thread to wake up to.

I'd be doing well on the league table by the way. 4 likes for my post that was (1) designed to ironically highlight how to succeed on the league table, and (2) funny.

People are pointing out "issues" as they were invited to do in post 1 of this thread.
Or they are rebutting their words being distorted, which seems reasonable.
Or they are (gosh!) expressing an opinion or preference for something.

You are, of course, welcome to go back to bed if it's all too much for you.

Like buttons are implemented for subscribers now. Bug fixes coming in fast over here!

I'm not doubting that some posts are useful, but there's a lot of mess in between. Including some opinions not based on reality and some preferences that are losing touch with it.

I have no issue with you pointing out the Like button problem you were having.

I can't go back to bed. I haven't left.

Yep, I take full responsibility for the confusion. The "Like" button was enabled for Regular Members, but that permission did not follow through to subscribers, or moderators.

I have enabled the like button for all user groups except Guests, "Just Joined" (no posts) and Newbies (under 10 posts).

Please yay or nay.

Apologies to all. I am learning the features of this new software like all of us.

Brian

Sounds great! We're all learning together. Might be a bumpy ride for a week or two but after that it will be lots of fun playing with the new features.

I'm amazed at how few problems there have been, given that it was a major version upgrade. My only gripe at this point is that the font for posts has gotten smaller and my eyes haven't gotten any better. And quoted posts seem to have a larger font than native ve posts. Maybe that is browser dependent.

Where? In the top Profile link?

Don't be offended, I'm going to Ignore you @George temporarily while I test it.

If you click on your name at top left, then Ignore List, the list that appears is empty. If you click on "Edit Buddy List" on the same page, an empty list of buddies appears. I have people in both categories, so I can confirm this.

Also, if you click on Users Online at the bottom, the list that appears is empty.

Those are all showing for me.

Anyone else having problems viewing Buddies, Ignore List or Who is Online?

If I click on Alerts at top left, then All Alerts, I also get an empty list.
