Instead of a hundred non-subscribers telling us they can see it, which is pretty well known at this point, could we try get some subscribers to comment, with them both logged in (so their subscriber status takes effect) and logged out (so it doesn't)?

I can confirm this account. No poll logged in, poll when logged out. Thanks for identifying the problem.

But surely the results are heavily skewed. If people can't see it how are they able to vote "No"?
