Some other late Brahms piano works recordings are Dénes Várjon, Jenő Jandó, Olga Kopil and Stanislav Bunin.

I interpret this as a joke.

There are some people for whom science is too sacred to joke about ;)

It is a joke, one that Todd used several times.

Quote from: Hobby on August 29, 2023, 08:11:02 AMMany years ago I bought Stefan Vladar's recording of opp 116-119. It was highly rated at the time - either Penguin Guide or Gramophone. I still enjoy it and wonder if you've listened to it Todd? How would you rate it?

I've not heard it, but Vlader has done some good stuff, so I will keep it in mind next time I dive into late Brahms.

Glenn Gould is idiosyncratic but I can't get enough of his late Brahms.

The intermezzi certainly. Have you heard his Chopin sonata? I think it's a similar approach - the music deconstructed almost .

Yes exactly. No I haven't, thanks for the recommendation!

I also feel Glenn Gould and his Ten Intermezzi recording is special. For instance Op118 no.6 middle section is played legato instead of staccato, which is likely not the way Brahms wrote it as nobody else plays it like that. The effect is magical, even if all "wrong". The entire disc is revelatory imho. That and his Byrd/Gibbons are the high marks of his recordings for me.
