I'll be home on the Essex Suffolk border. Quite close enough thank you very much.

Definitely not going to London but there are various celebratory festivities going on in our village. We will attend the lighting of the Beacon on Saturday night. We are not too sure about the 'Communal Picnic' on Sunday. When Her late Majesty celebrated 70 years on the throne there was a nice street party which we joined in - it was fun and we got to know some of our neighbours better than before.

I'll be in London this  weekend. Their Majesties are insisting on stopping by my suite at Claridge's to say hello, before heading to the Abbey, and it would seem rude to tell them not to. I'm still debating whether to attend the coronation itself, and the luncheon at the palace later. Those things are sooo long and sooo boring. My invitation says "+1", if anyone really wants to go...  ;D

That sounds like you had a nice time!

This is the front of my house - as you see, we are fully entering the celebratory mood  ;D

Oh, sweet!

Where did you find those flags/bunting (not certain what you call them)?  By the way what is that tall climbing thing on your brick next to the door?  Does it flower?

Just caught a bit of the BBC newshour on t.v.  The part that caught my attention was an interview with two men who used to be in the choir and were there for Queen Elizabeth's coronation ceremony.  Fun to hear their stories.  :)

Will you be taking the oath?

I swear that I will pay true allegiance to your majesty, and to your heirs and successors according to law. So help me God

Hi PD,
I'm told it's a Solanum and yes it does flower (I spent ages up a ladder recently cutting it back). Bunting was bought online (£6.00) and came the next day. We have the most sophisticated bunting (designed for the coronation and not just the UK flag)  ;D

I doubt it - I'm not keen on public expressions of patriotism.

Luke

An ancient and hallowed tradition. When I was at Kings a fellow music student/choral scholar in my year (now a respected cellist specialist in baroque continuo playing) created an identical fertility symbol on the back lawn behind Kings College Chapel. I remember us all realising when we looked out of the window of the library.

Not a chance - but my feeling is that this is really just a publicity gaff.  The idea was to "move" the sense of this loyal oath from being just for/by the "lords and ladies" of the country to being a collective national expression of support.  The trouble is the reporting of it has made it sound as though we must all 'bend the knee'.  Oh Justin - you've gone and done it again......

Quote from: vandermolen on May 01, 2023, 04:42:17 AMWell, I'm sure that you are all looking forward to this ( 8)  :o  ;D ). I have just decorated the front of the house with Coronation flags etc. Any views on this momentous event?

I will try to catch this on TV. I'm mostly interested in listening to the music (hopefully the BBC coverage won't be burdened by inane commentary), especially the newly-commissioned anthems.

I have found this, listing the order of service and musical works for the day:

https://www.classicfm.com/discover-music/king-coronation-full-order-of-service/#:~:text=Weelkes%20Anthem,anniversary%20of%20Thomas%20Weelkes%27%20death.

Even though I had read he was meant to take care of the pre-ceremony music, I don't find details anywhere of John Eliot Gardiner's contribution or works on the day. And that was the thing I was most looking forward to.  :(

I say go alone and maybe you'll be seated next to Harry. 😀

As for the whole affair, it doesn't seem that pared down, does it...and he could pay for most of it himself...

A bit tone-deaf in the current climate.
