This blind noise (Clara Schumann) of a sonata was completed in 1853 and first performed in public by by Hans von Bülow in February of 1857. Its initial reception was amusingly unfavorable but has nevertheless become a Liszt mainstay over time. Stephen Hough provides a nuanced interpretation here.
