Notifications are working for me now.

Slooooow when posting, but for browsing it's mostly fast (under .5 seconds to load.)

OK I have done some investigating. The site is under attack from bots, one of them from China requesting hundreds of pages every minute. These bots are automated web trawlers, not necessarily malicious, they are often just scanning pages for content for search indexes, or other reasons. But they slow the legitimate access to the forum considerably.

I am going to learn how to block them at a server level. First bit of code initiated, please let me know if you notice any difference.

cheers

Seems better now. Faster to post (1.4 seconds) and faster to browse (.9 seconds.)

Maybe they are collecting a training set for an AI chatbot. If so if anyone asks it to name the best composer ever it will confidently reply Havergal Brian.

Page created in 3.735 seconds with 36 queries.

One could say that it is slow, very much so. Those Bots are quite aggressive.

I was having a slow time of it around the same time as Harry. Though several hours later it seems to be back to normal speed.
I finally have the ability to edit my signature again. But no, I've no idea what I want to say here right now.

Harry

Wow, its lagging now big time. When I click on an email link, I get a black screen first, and 4 or 5 seconds later the page appears. Posting takes even longer.....

It takes ages before the Likes appear. This morning I tried to find those that were liked, but non of them showed it. I takes about 20-40 seconds to load a page, and had cases that it took a full minute or more. Those Bots are a aggressive bunch of Toadheads. I had a similar attack of my system 6 months ago, so I know what havoc it creates.

Page created in 1.341 seconds with 20 queries.

This is incorrect. I used my own chronometer and it showed 5.06 seconds.

I am getting similar discrepancies.

@Dungeon Master   What about installing one of those "Prove that you are not a bot" guards that one has to do before they can access the website?  Too expensive or complicated to set up?  And how effective are they?

Just a thought.  :)

Quite slow here this morning (10:48 EDT in US). A good 5 seconds executing any command, whether moving to a new page or simply clicking the "Like" button.

Adding my appreciation for Rob's work, vanquishing all these bots!

I hope they are benign and not some sort of malicious attack. If they are really spiders creating an index, would it take this long for them to download the entire contents of the site for their index? On the other hand, what could an malicious actor want from this site? To gain unauthorized access to our preference for Bruckner symphonies? :)

Site seems uniformly slow at this point, requiring several seconds for a like to be registered, for quoted text to appear, to view a listing.

It's a trivial data point, but when hitting "Like," normally the site's response is instantaneous, but of late it's consistently disinstantaneous.

Correct, I already said that in an earlier post, but I am glad you experience that too. :)

Yes, it took me forever to like this post. :)
